Northside delivery and breastfeeding

Hey Ladies,
Just a quick question for those that delivered at Northside.  I've heard from several people(that delivered at various hospitals) that the hospital will give you the tubing, shields, repacement parts, etc that go with a pump.  I'm borrowing the Medela PISA from my bff and not sure if I need to purchase these items now or if i'll just get them.  I've only seen Amazon carry, so if I can avoid shipping something I don't need back, that would be easier.

THANKS!!!

  • You won't get any of  those things unless you see a LC. I had my son in Oct and they would not get me a LC appt until he had jaundice. You have to have "difficulty" bfing before they will make you an appt. this is a very different situation then when I had my first son two years ago. They basically just signed me up to mert when a LC then. I got some replacement parts but the tubing only fit the symphony breast pump. They did not fit my Pisa. I would not guarantee you will get any of those things. I just order replacement parts from Amazon.

  • With both of my girls, they immediately asked if I'd like to see the LC and I said yes.  It may have been because of a couple of reasons though.  DD#1 was on the big side, so they tend to have issues maintaining weight (or so I was told) and DD#2 was 3 weeks early.  I was never offered a pump the first go round, but was the second.  It was luck of the draw which pump you got and mine was one I've never seen before (I've got a PISA at home).  The parts they gave me to go with it didn't fit my PISA (except the tubing once you cut off the little tip on the end).  I think I may have gotten a set of shields and tiny bottles too.  I'd go ahead and order some though - you can never have enough and you don't want to have to worry with going to get them once the baby gets here.

  • With DS1, the LC brought me a pump to use and I kept everything she gave me. I  used a hospital grade one and all the parts fit my PISA at home. DS1 was 9lb12oz so that's why she brought me the pump.

With DS2, I brought everything with my PISA to the hospital. I still asked to see an LC and they came every day even through I really didn't need them too.

That's really odd! My friend just had a baby and had no problems getting an LC to come to the room. She was a FTM through so maybe that makes a difference. I don't know.

Also to the OP, I got tubing and everything I needed at New Baby Products in Buckhead. You have to ask for the tubing b/c they don't keep it on the shelf like everything else. Also Target has a good selection except tubing.

  • Perfect!  Thanks so much, this is exactly what I was looking for!  It's pretty inexpensive so I'll go ahead and order today.  So weird that it's hit or miss with what everyone experienced!

I am so shocked by this. Now I'm even more thankful I delivered at kennestone. The LC was waiting for me in recovery after my cs. Sophie was nursing w/in 15 min of birth. Pretty amazing now that I think about it! I really wish more hospitals were like that!

  • When I has graham there was a LC there the morning after he was born. He was born really late at night. I  asked to have the LC come by when I had Ethan and the nurses said they couldnt unless there was a bfing issue. We wrent having any problems. He ended up with jaundice so I did see a LC but they weren't going to make the appt until that happened. I also delivered during the busiest week northside has experienced on awhile so maybe that had something to do with it. He is a product of the snow/ice storm last year;)

October in generally is really busy up there at least that's what they told me in October 2010 when I had Bryce. I also think the nursing staff hears you are a 2nd time mom and it changes some things. With Bryce, we hardly ever saw anyone whcih wasn't a huge deal since we'd just been there 15 months previously. The only thing that got me was we had to constantly ask for my pain meds then one nurse ended up doubling my percoset which made me sick the day I left. This time I've already told dh to keep a spreadsheet of when I was the medicines/what the med is so we know that I'm not getting doubled up on.

  • Ditto slw.  I delivered at Kennestone too and had no problem seeing a LC and the LC even offered the parts.  They bill your insurance so it isn't like the hospital is eating the cost.  But they can only bill your insurance for the parts if you are an in-patient.  Once you go home they can't bill.
