Trying to Get Pregnant

Clots during period (possible TMI)

Ever since having DD#1, I have noticed quite a few nickle-sized clots of blood coming out the last couple days of my period.  Does anyone else have this?  Could this indicate some sort of problem that might be making it more difficult for us to conceive this time around?

I have done a little Google searching but haven't found much information. The only thing I found is that it could indicate that the uterus never returned to its pre-pregnancy size and there is some pooling of blood in the uterus before it passes through.

Any thoughts?  Sorry, this is kind of gross.

Re: Clots during period (possible TMI)

  • I clot, and I've never given birth. I think it's normal to a certain extent. Just keep an eye on it.

  • Do you have more pain than usual?

I have always experienced this with my periods and sometimes worse but I have a unicornuate uterus and endometriosis. If it is something you are concerned about and have discomfort with you should definately reach out to your Doc.

  • Your doctor should have checked your uterus at your 6 week check-up to make sure it was back to it's normal size.

  • I definitely have more clots after DS--my periods are shorter but heavier.  No idea why--happens both on and off BC.  Your cycle will change throughout your life--I've always just chalked it up to that.
  • Ok, thanks ladies!!  I don't have any pain and even the biggest ones aren't anywhere near golf ball size so I am sure it is nothing.  I will ask at my next appointment if I start noticing anything larger.  I love being able to ask questions here, you guys are the best!!

  • I also have clots.  Some periods I do sometimes I don't.  The body is a mysterious thing!

    This.

I clot every now and then but it's nothing extreme.

  • I have always had clots during my period, both before and after having children.  Like GM said, as long as they're not golf ball sized or bigger it should be ok.  You can always mention it to your doctor at your next annual for reassurance.

Clots are normal. If they get to golf ball size, then call.

This. Personally as someone who passes golf ball to softball sized clots, I first called my doc simply because of how much pain I was in while passing the larger "clots."

  • I've always had clots, even pre-baby. I usually have a dozen small ones and one quarter sized or a little bigger. My cycles are normal and I've had no problems with pregnancy or anything so I don't think it's anything to worry about.
