Whats your DC's bedtime routine?

And how soon did you start it? Sleep has been a struggle around here this week. TIA.

Re: Whats your DC's bedtime routine?

  • We're still getting ours down so I'm interested in this too - mostly for us it's bath, boob, rock to sleep but I'm wondering when to start reading and anything else people do to get them calmed down...

  • For both kids (7 months and 21 months) they go to bed around 6.

We usually do dinner around 5,

    then play for a bit,

    read books, etc.

    Then change diaper,

    put on pjs and

    put down for bed.?

  • we didn't start a real routine til he was around 6 months I think...

at 2 weeks, our routine was "boob, sleep"...

when you say sleep has been a struggle, what do you mean?  at 2 weeks, there's not much good sleep you can expect.  and you can expect an hour or more of random wakefulness in th emiddle of the night...

I think the first month at least is just survival.  pretty much nothng you do now will be done in the coming months.  your baby is changing so much every day....

this early, I'd say just make sure to keep it dark and quiet at night, and bright and loud during the day.  that will help get their days and nights on track.

  • oh, but our routine is bath (if it's a bath night), then brush teeth, jammies, read books, lights out/sound machine on, he gets a sippy of milk that he drinks about 3 sips from now, and then some snuggles or he lays on the couch (in his room) next to me til he's sort of calm/settled, then into the crib, blanket on, I rub his back and say "night night" and then I lay on the floor til he falls asleep.

When we started the "routine" it was more like books, lights out, bottle, fall asleep in my arms.  For some reason, we did bottle before bed - oh, I know, it was so DH could put him to bed and I could go to sleep earlier.  THen it was just so we could keep him liking bottles.

Later the routine was for him to fall asleep on the couch or in my arms after the bottle, instead of with it in his mouth.

Later I would put him in the crib really sleepy, but I'd kneel by the crib and rub his back...

As you can see, it's been a long process.

  • Bath, then bottle while Jeremy reads out loud.  Then lately it usually takes a little rocking/bottom patting to get her to sleep.  We've been doing that since we could start giving her baths.

  • We started as soon as DD could take a bath and we've done it consistantly since.  Bath, book, bottle/boob, bed.  When she was teeny tiny we'd let her fall asleep on the boob/bottle, but as she got older, we won't let her.  She's always awake for a little lullaby or kisses before we put her in her crib.

  • Our routine has pretty much always been the same but the time is all over the place because when they are that young you can never tell.  We do bath, and then he comes out and plays with us on the couch for a bit and then bottle and bed.  He doesn't always go to sleep after the bottle sometimes that turns into play time too.  If that is the case then we rock for about 10 min and then let him play around in his crib.

I wouldn't worry too much about a routine yet, it seems Cruz put us into our routine not the other way aroundBig Smile

  • At 3 weeks old sleep is suppose to be a struggle!

Around 6 to 8 weeks we started routines (both kids)

Dinner (6:30), Bath (7:00), Book, Bottle, Bed (7:30)

We now do sippy cup of water instead, because the bottle will be going bye bye in a month

  • We started her routine from the first day we could bath her and have stuck to it to a T.  Bath time with mommy, then cuddle/book/dark room time with daddy while he feeds her a bottle and then to bed.  We do not use soap every night but at least the warm water settles her.  We start the routine at 7:30 and she is usually out by 8.  She has STTN since 8 weeks old and I honestly think it is due to the routine.

  • We always start at the same time 7or 730pm depending on the night. But we do bath everyother night with me in the tub Daddy helps. Then Daddy takes him to change into PJ's. Then either one of us does bottle book rock. Then he is usually asleep or close to it by 830pm. We lay him down in the crib then check on him to make sure he is sleeping.
