Austin Babies

helloooo

Well well well, lots of familiar screennames from my days on the knot! Anyway, I'm forever posing baby questions on fb and a few of you have suggested asking over here instead so here I am.My daughter is 3.5 months and has been rolling belly to back since about 2 weeks. The past couple nights I've put her to sleep in the crib and she immediately rolls from her belly to back (she's a tummy sleeper) and freaks out crying. After about 2.5 hours of this she finally falls asleep without rolling. Girlfriend is driving me crazy. Apparently babies don't comprehend the if-you-don't-want-to-freak-out-then-don't-do-it concept ;-) anyway, just wondering how long this phase may have lasted for your babies or if there's anything I should be doing aside from flipping her neck and comforting her. Thanks!

Re: helloooo

  • PS, pleased to see my signature remains in tact 3 years later but needs some baby updating.PPS, is there a mobile site or app for this? Typing is dreadful, I have to do it in the html editor but can't edit anything once I've closed it, bleh
  • I'm not sure. Our pedi says to put them to sleep on their back until they're able to roll to their stomach on their own. She cries for 2.5 hours? Poor baby. Sad

There is a 4-month wakeful period (usually starts in their fourth month...so, when they are 3+ months old) that is characterized by disrupted sleep patterns, harder time falling asleep, waking more, harder to go back to sleep, etc. That could also be contributing.

  • It's like rock / nurse her to sleep 20-30 min, put her down, rolls within a couple minutes, cries, rock to sleep again, rolls, cries. For 2.5 hours. I'd imagine back sleeping babies would go through this as well, startled that they're not in the position they're most comfortable with. She's never liked laying on her back, but recently likes playing on her back and attempting to roll back to her stomach lol. Just my luck to have a child as opinionated as I am :-)
  • Many times moms will put a rolled up blanket or something to the side of a back-sleeping baby to discourage the rolling, but I'd be way wary of sticking something in the crib to force a baby to stay on her stomach.

My first went through something similar when she started rolling to tummy at night. I think it took about three nights of her waking up pissed that she was on her stomach, and then she got used to it. I hope yours gets used to it soon!

  • Yes, I lose enough sleep at night with her on her belly, I might go ballistic trapping her that way. Maybe after a couple nights she'll surprise me and want to stay on her back, I would actually love that. By the way, your kids are so cute, I adore your daughters hair!
  • I have nothing to add... But just wanted to say welcome!! These boards have been so helpful to me, glad you came on over!!

  • I didn't know you were pregnant again! With twins! Is violet so excited to be a big sister!?
  • Hi there and welcome!

Have you tried swaddling before putting her on her back? You could do a tight swaddle and then rock and put her down or stand by her crib and rub her tummy/ head until she's settling.

Big ol' ditto to the 4 month wakeful. Hopefully, either she'll learn to roll back to tummy or pass through the wakeful period quickly. 2.5 hours of getting to sleep time is no good.

  • Ha, yes! I haven't said much on Facebook...I have too many randoms still on my friend list - need to clean it up. In august we had a huge shock when we found out it was twins (they're identical boys) and ran back to Boston area, where all our family is! Unfortunately, I'm now on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy, but hoping these kiddos keep on baking a long while! V is really excited!

  • No advice either... mine hated being on her belly at that age, not her back.  But I wanted to say hi!!
  • My kids were all tummy sleepers and never slept on their backs. I found this period the most frustrating and there is really nothing that you can do. We would just keep flipping them over until they stopped rolling and then during the day we would try to help teach them how to roll to their stomachs from their backs. It usually lasted a couple of weeks for us until they can just roll all over. This is probably the only thing that I hated about tummy sleeping!!
  • No advice since V was a dedicated back sleeper, but wanted to say hi and welcome!
