Coffee table?

We put our coffee table away when DS started crawling. I really miss it. It's a wooden coffee table, not very large. We have end tables out and DS never has a problem w/ them. Does anyone still have a coffee table out in their living room? How is your LO w/ it?

Re: Coffee table?

  • It's still put away because it has a glass top. If it was all wood I would give it a try but for now the risk of broken glass is too high. LO is 2, but my nephews ages 3 and 5 are still too rough with it also.

  • I don't remember the exact timeline, but we pushed ours against the wall around the time he started crawling everywhere and put it back out once he was walking steady. He's never, ever run into it.

This. Liam has now learned to climb on top of the coffee table to reach things we hid from him on top of the entertainment center.

  • My ILs had a glass coffee table and put it away because there were four babies/toddlers in the family.  We have a wooden one and we've never put it away.

  • I never took ours away.  Or covered the edges or anything.  I can understand being worried when a kid is just learning to walk and might hit his head, but what are you worried about at this point?  (not snarky, just wondering)

The only problem we have is that if we push the coffee table too close to the couch, DD likes to put her one foot on the couch and one foot on the coffee table and "walk" the length of the table.

If you're worried about him climbing on the table, I'm sure you can teach him not to.  Even if he's very interested in it for the first few days it's out, if he gets a time out (or whatever consequence you use) each time, I'm sure it would get old soon.

Ours is a (very) large wooden table.  DD is totally fine with it -- all of her toys are stored inside (it has doors so everything is concealed).

  • We never got rid of ours, and now it is LO's main play area! Most of her toys are in a basket in the living room, and she does a LOT of activities on the coffee table. Perfect height for her. When she was younger she learned to pull up to standing with it, and would walk along it holding for support. It's essential to our living!

  • We also never put ours away. DD used it for pulling up and walking, and now she plays on it, puts her cup on it while she is playing, and just recently has she started pushing the limits by trying to climb on top of it. All it takes is just one look and she quickly slides back down.
