SO solids.. Making your own ?

Are you using a blender, food processor, or baby-specific processor like the Baby Bullet? I have an old-school 2 speed blender but I'm wondering if I should invest in a new appliance when we start feeding DD fruits and veggies this month..

Any recommendations?

  • We got a baby bullet on sale. We have a regular blender but it's constantly in use, so I needed something to make her food that was not going to take up a ton of space.

I'm sure you could use the blender just the same. The baby bullet has been good for us so far, we've been using it for about 2m now.

  • We use the baby bullet, but I'm sure any processor would work just fine.  I mean, that's all it is.  They just slapped a happy face on it!

  • We have the Cuisinart hand wand that has a food processor attachment that I use to make her food. It is the BEST thing we got for our wedding. We use it for SO MUCH STUFF. But I use it even more now that I make LO's baby food because. It works great and is super easy.

  • We have a mini food processor I use. I wish it was bigger because it's a PITA to blend in so many batches.

  • I use a regular old blender. I have an immersion blender, too, but haven't used that yet.

  • We use our Ninja blender that we already had.  For the short length of time they eat purees and for how much I'll actually use it, I didn't want to invest in a new appliance that takes up more cabinet space.  It didn't puree peas and green beans very well, they turned out kinda chunky, but he eats them just fine.

BTW, I've been so surprised at how effortless this baby food making is!  We've been doing it for almost 3 months and I've only made about 4 batches of food - just a few (total) hours of work to save money and serve healthier food!

Totally agree with all of this, only I use a food processor attachment that we already had. It came with our blender that we got with wedding money, and we got it knowing that I'd want to make baby food with the processor attachment.

I JUST started making food, but it is definitely super easy, very cheap, and fun. You can make a lot in just a few small batches, and those batches last a long time so I agree that it probably isn't necessary to get anything special since they don't even eat purees that long. And many items don't need a machine at all. When it comes to bananas, avocados, peas, etc, I just mash it with a fork and call it good.

If you don't already have something and you are trying to decide, I would definitely get something along the lines of a blender/processor combo that you can use for yourself!

ETA- Forgot that you mentioned you had a two speed blender already! I would give that a try. As long as your food is cooked well enough (and is super soft) I'm guessing it would work. You might need to add a little more liquid than you would with a food processor, but I'm not sure. Like I mentioned before, if you do get something new, just make sure it's something you can use for yourself when you are done with all this. If you don't think you would use a food processor ever again, and if you don't need a blender with more than two speeds, then I don't think it would be worth the investment.

  • We got the baby bullet as a gift, otherwise I would have just used a blender.  I find some items take a really long time to blend in the bullet :(.

  • I use my kitchenaid blender and it works great. I was going to buy the Beaba but using my steamer that I already have and the blender is working so I'm saving that money for something else.

  • Blender and food processor. The blender I use for smooth purees and the food processor does a good job doing chunky food. I used just my blender for a long time with no problems. The one I have is also pretty old. I've used a friends baby bullet and think its a wast of money. The only thing I liked about it is that you can make smaller batches if you want, but I prefer to make a big batch and freeze it.
  • We have a Beaba that I bought on eBay. I really like that it steams, purees, and defrosts all in one device. It was extremely easy to use with DD1 and we we actually still use it at times to reheat/steam toddler size portions for her.

  • I have a regular magic bullet and it works fine.  I don't use it that much actually because I cook her food in the pressure cooker to the point that it comes out fork mashable.

  • Try using your blender first. The one I had was awful, so I bought a Ninja . It was $20. Works great.

  • I use our KitchenAid Blender and it works great. We got it for our wedding shower nearly 5 years ago and I never used it untill about two months ago when I started making DS's food. I agree with PPs. If your going to get something new, get something that you will benefit from in the future. Before you know it, purees will be a thing of the past for our LOs.

  • I absolutely HATE cleaning my food processor bowl, so I use my immersion (stick) blender, and I absolutely adore it.  I can blend to any texture from chunky to silky smooth, I just steam or roast whatever I'm making, dump into a nice deep bowl, add a little of the steaming liquid and the stick blender whips it into shape in seconds. I throw the bowl into the dishwasher and rinse the blender in some hot soapy water, it couldn't be easier. You can get them at a great price, and they are spectacular for making adult foods too (I use it all winter long for soup).
