Vicks vapo plug in? Safe?

Hadley has her first cold, which I now understand is the only thing in the world worse than a man cold... hate seeing her so miserable. I bought a humidifier today, and got a Vicks plug in for her room... I looked and looked online and didn't see that it was safe/not safe for babies rooms, but it smells so strong. She breaks out when wearing disposable diapers so I didn't want to put Vicks on her if the plug in worked as well. It does smell strong.. would you/have you used them for your kids? TIA

Re: Vicks vapo plug in? Safe?

  • I just plugged ours in for our little guy. I put it on level 1. I think it is fine. That plus the vaporizer should help her. I would just use the plug in and not the rub and see how it goes.

Did you check the packaging for warning labels? It's my understanding that menthol is discouraged in babies under 24 months. My pedi even told me not to do anything with menthol other than the vick's *baby* rub.  She specifically said not to use the vapor steam in our humidifier.

If you're worried about the vapor rub, you can put it on her jammies and not her skin. That's what we do with Jack and it helps.

I did look and it didn't say anything about babies... or an age it was recommended for. Hmm... Maybe I should take it out, it doesn't have a level that you can change and it is very strong...

  • I think this is one of those things that depends on the pediatrician. I do not like giving DS antibiotics or medicine when it isn't absolutely necessary and for colds she recommend using a vaporizer and Vicks.

We used the vaporizer with the Vicks poured in, we've used the Vicks that plugs into the wall like a night light (with the medicated sticks you stick in) as well as one that plugs in with a cord attached.

They all worked really well and within one night of using the Vicks DS would be cleared up and I would just run the regular water through the humidifier for another week or so.

It is pretty strong, but that's what helps them.

Can you put it right outside of her door in the hallway or something?

We used our plug-ins in the living room during really sick times, when DS was awake during the day.

  • I personally would just use the humidifier.  It would never occur to me to buy Vicks, the rub or plug-in, for a baby

The bottle actually says not to be used with children under two, though. I mean it won't kill her, obviously, but if the label says it....

You're right. I cleared it with our pediatrician first. Generally it's in there for one night or two and it's never caused any issues.

  • I put the baby rub on ds2 all the time. He has very sensitive skin and that stuff doesn't bother him. It's pretty mild.

  • My mother got DD one for her first birthday, we've used it a few times.  I thought it would put off a lot more steam from what I've read.  The one she got, pretty much provides the vicks smell throughout her room, so if I forget the Vicks while putting PJ's on I can just plug that in.  I never felt like the humidifier did anything so I wanted to try this instead.
