Article:

Johnson & Johnson has recalled thousands of tubes of its Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion after a sample contained too much bacteria.

Tests by the Food and Drug Administration found a batch of the lotion contained more of a form of naturally-occurring bacteria than specifications allow.

Around 2,200 bottles of the lotion - with lot number 0161LK - have now been recalled from shops across Southern states.

The product was sold across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas, the company said.

It had been produced by an unnamed manufacturer in Canada.

The bacteria was identified as coagulase-negative Staphylococci, which naturally occurs in the environment.

It can lead to health problems such as central nervous system or urinary tract infections. Strains are resistant to antibiotics.

'These are common bacteria often found on the skin and scalp of babies and adults, and found in commonly used household and cosmetic products, at very low levels,' Johnson & Johnson said.

The company did not release the amount that was detected in the sample.

It added that later tests found the bacteria did not exceed specifications and that the chance of health being affected is small.

A statement said: 'That test indicated the lot exceeded the specifications for common bacteria, though extensive testing by an independent laboratory afterward did not show that specifications were exceeded.

'However, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies Inc. has voluntarily initiated this recall out of an abundance of caution.

'This action is not being undertaken on the basis of adverse events and the potential for adverse health effects is remote.'

Bonnie Jacobs from the company said the recall is being carried out at the retail level. Those who have bought the affected product can still use it,

But Johnson & Johnson urged consumers who would like a refund to call 877-298-2525.

Over recent years, the company has faced a number of product recalls across its diverse businesses.

Recalls of products, such as hip-replacement parts and over-the-counter medicines, have been significant enough to hurt its harm financial results.

The company's shares closed Friday down 14 cents at $65.56.

Re: Aveeno lotion recall

  • Pretty par for the course for Johnson & Johnson :(  I guess at least more people will realize that Aveeno isn't an acceptable alternative to the usual J&J products.
