Trying to Get Pregnant

Cumulative vs Total Months TTC

Does your ob/gyn make a distinction between the two? I just went to my annual and told her that we tried for 4 months, TTA for 6, and are now onto month 4 of TTC again (so month 8 total). She told me if I am not pregnant in 6-8 months to come in. She mentioned something about birth control and it didn't really hit me until now that she might have thought I went back on the pill the months we were TTA, which we did not. Just wondering if there was a miscommunication between us or if consecutive months is what matters??

Oh, an the waiting room could have been out of an episode of Team Mom. I feel so old!

Re: Cumulative vs Total Months TTC

  • I don't know my OB/gyn's view, but here's my thinking. If you'd avoided for one month/cycle, that would be one thing. But you avoided for 6, and something could have changed in your reproductive health or fertility in that time (i.e. you could be more consistent in cycling now vs. then or if you have a condition that you didn't know about that would have been controlled with BCPs, it would be evident now but maybe not before), so the 4 months you tried previous to your break wouldn't carry a lot of weight for me. I think with a break that long, consecutive months TTC would be more important.

  • Typically an OBGYN wants to see you after 12 consecutive months of trying.  I think she was trying to say, since you have been trying this time for 4 months, to come in around 12 months to see me if you aren't pregnant, which is normal.

Without knowing what she said about birth control pills, I can't really comment on his/her intent.

But, if you have any questions, you may want to give him/her a call and ask.

Agreed. Had it been 1 or 2 months, sure. But 6 months? No. You are starting over.

    That makes sense. Thanks!

I feel like I would watch the show "Team Mom".  Like a team of moms that save the world.

    Haha... oops!
