Epic Tantrum..

A few of you ladies witnessed Eve's tantrum at Explore and More because she couldn't get a snack from the vending machine..Confused .. I will just say that that was small potatoes in comparison to today.

Today we were at the library (not the one here in town, thank goodness, because i am not sure I can go back).. and my mom met us there.. Eve was just not being a good girl. Not listening, talking/yelling really loud despite being told not to 97,000 times, running away from us and just being very disagreeable. So I don't know what it was that finally made me say "thats it" but I told her we were leaving. Which caused.. FULL BLOWN, screaming, wailing, top of her lungs, as high pitched as she could possibly get screeching IN THE LIBRARY... I tried to leave her with my mom while I took Natalie to check out our books but my mom could not control her. So finally i just left Natalie where she was in the stroller, told my mom to go with Natalie, and I picked up Eve under my arm and carried her out the door.. I ended up going out the front door and i was parked in the back so by her yelling and the way I was carrying her, anyone passing by probably thought I was kidnapping her. I have to say.. I'm actually impressed with myself for keeping my cool as well as I did.. because I really wanted to scream/cry/smack her.. but some how i remained calm. I don't know what I would have done if my mom wasn't there.. I couldn't have carried Eve AND pushed natalie's stroller.

She kept crying for about 20 minutes while we waited for my mom to come back with natalie and even awhile after we left.. Finally she started to calm down a little and said she was hungry, so I gave her a donut hole that i happened to have in the car and she quieted right down.. and honestly, she was a GREAT kid the rest of the day.. I made her call my mom and apologize to her, which she did.. We had lunch, we did crafts, we went and had a treat at the bakery, and went to Family dollar and she was actually friendly with people.. I just don't understand it.. How does my sweet child become possessed by some demon?

Re: Epic Tantrum..

  • Could her being hungry have made it over the top? Dd gets extremely whiney and easy to cry and throw a fit when she is hungry. I actually am similar - I get cranky when I'm hungry. And then once we eat, we are happy.

  • Have you heard me say that 3 is worse than 2???

It happens to all of us. Good for you for keeping your cool, it is so hard to not scream back.

(and that vending machine tantrum was nothing!)

I was going to ask this too. The oldest girl I was a nanny for used to do this. Sweet as peaches but would turn nutty if she didn't eat something every few hours. She also went nutty if she had candy with dye in it, like skittles.

Anywho....I pat you on the back for keeping your cool. We have not crossed this path *yet* so I have no idea what might have happened. He has turned into a limp crying mess when we leave my dads, but dh has been there to scoop him up and carry him to the car. I am going to my sisters without dh Sunday and I am already scared for when it's time to leave. He has so much fun with his cousins he just doesn't want to go home.

  • Good for you for keeping calm and just getting her out of there.  Maybe if it's food related, her blood sugar drops quickly causing the demon to come out.  I have a feeling that I will be in for some similar tantrums Hmm

  • Good for you for staying calm. It's not easy, and I hate to say it, but she's almost 3, so this may just be the beginning of the Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde thing. Hang in there - you can handle it. I agree with the others - maybe her being hungry triggers the demon. It's that way for Ian when he's overtired. He tries to fight his nap on weekends lately, and when he doesn't sleep, he tries everything he can to stay awake, including being a raving lunatic.
  • Good job keeping your composure. It's funny b.c we say the same "demon" thing about Justin. He's pretty chill like 99% of the time but when he gets mad he is straight up possessed.

Public tantrums are one of those things where before I had kids I would shake my head and judge the parent. Now (like when I heard Eve at E&M) it doesn't even phase me- she's just a normal almost 3 yr old. I think they get frustrated and then just want to see us get mad, so we give in.  You did the right thing :)

  • Good for you for keeping your cool!  I'm terrified of the day that I have to deal with that.  I'm sure it's coming sooner than later.  I agree with the other ladies, could Eve have been hungry and that caused her meltdown?  ::Makes note to keep snacks on me at all times::

  • Good for you for handling such a tough situation with composure!!!

I too wondered like the others if fluctuating blood sugar could have brought out the tantrum? I know I am a raving loon when my blood sugar drops and I am hungry. Like the universe must stop until I can eat. Might be worth it to keep an eye on?
