What to expect at my first appointment? 6 weeks

I am scheduled to go in Monday when I will be exactly 6 weeks. Any idea on what to expect? I have had no previous pregnancies, 28 years old, I don't think I have any major risk factors.

I was mainly curious (omg I know this is a dumb question) - do they have to do an ultrasound to get a heartbeat? Or can they listen some other way? Will they do anything beyond a blood pregnancy test?

Of course I know it varies but I am quite anxious.

With dd at my first appointment  (11 weeks) it was medical history, urine sample, blood pressure, blood draws, weight check, going over the do's/don'ts, then my MW did do an u/s because I was a nervous wreck. We were able to see the baby, and a tiny flicker of h/b. U/s and doppler checks can be uncommon at the first appointment because the baby is so tiny you can miss things. Hope this helps!

At 6 weeks you will probably PIAC and do bloodworm. Also probably whaty doc calls the dating ultrasound. It is too early to actually hear the baby's heartbeat but you should be able to at least see it. Some higher tech machines can simulate a heartbeat using what it picks up.

My office does first appointments at 6-7 weeks, and basically they just confirm pregnancy by ultrasound ( I was surprised that they did an internal ultrasound, so just a heads up!), but by then you can see the hearbeat, so its really exciting! They also have you meet with the OB/midwife briefly and answer basic questions. They gave me a packet  too with lots of good info about safe otc medications, nutrition, hospital info etc. The next appoinment is at 9-10weeks and then they do full medical history, pelvic exam, bloodwork etc. Write down any questions you have before you go, because I was so overwhelmed by the ultrasound that i forgot about half of the questions I wanted to ask! Good luck!
