Hi DH and I have spoken briefly about adoption and I have this idea in my head that it is a very costly process.
Does anyone know a round about cost of the adoption process? Is it different for different types of adoptions?
Is it best to speak to a adoption agency?

Hi and welcome. Check out the FAQ at the top of the board. It should have some resources for you to get some info.
Cost varies all over the place. Foster/adopt is free, or almost free. Domestic adoption fees can vary depending on how you go about it: there's private adoption, using an adoption law firm, a consultant, or a full-service agency. Even agency fees vary: some charge on a sliding scale based on income. I've seen agency fees ranging from the low $10Ks to almost $50K. Some states require birthmother expenses to be paid, some don't. You may or may not want to factor that in. International adoption can be expensive, and you need to factor in if you'd have a lot of travel costs.
Another thing to remember is that some workplaces provide adoption reimbursement. And at least for now there's an adoption tax credit. There are resources for grants and fundraising as well.
It's not necessarily best to speak to an agency. I'd start with the resources in the FAQs, see what path speaks to you, and go from there.
GL and keep posting
If you are doing a domestic adoption another factor to consider is whether it is in state or out of state. In state can be considerable less expensive as you don't have to hire adoption professionals in both states.
Good luck!!!
We are doing domestic infant adoption. Our finally cost is going to be close to 10,000. We do have to cover some birth mother costs. We also had to pay for FBI clearances, health checks and all filing fees.
