I just had an OB appointment and we talked about VBAC. My doctor said I could only go until 41 weeks. She cited a new study about pit inductions with VBACs and said that they would induce, but now I'm just a little bit disappointed about having to either go into labor or be induced at 41 weeks. I have an appointment with another doctor that will hopefully let me go longer than that. (I never went into labor on my own the first time so that happening again is kind of my fear.)
Re: Kind of disappointed
I hate due date rules. No one really knows a baby's exact due dates, they're all estimations. Mine was changed twice. And to not let a woman wait to go into labor on her bodies own time because she's a week "late" is irritating, considering the estimation could be a week off.
And I thought drs don't induce vbacs with pit for risks of rupture? Why couldn't she do a foley induction at least?
The recent studies have shown that a pit induction is safe for VBAC when done correctly. It's Cervadil that they can't give. Many doctors also don't do foley. My midwife does them but it didn't work for me because I wasn't dilated enough to get it in. Pit did the job, though.
But I agree that the hospital lawyers should not be allowed to make the decisions as to when babies MUST come out by.
Yep, my doctor was talking about pit for an induction and said that a recent study said it didn't increase the risk of a rupture. I guess I'm kind of grateful that at least I can be induced if I don't go into labor on my own. She would to a foley induction -- I had one for my first -- but it didn't work and you have to be at least a bit dilated to get it in.
My doc has also said that they'd agree to a very gentle pit induction if my body was ready (ie, a little bit dilated and effaced). She said they wouldn't do it if I was closed up like I am now, and same with Foley, since you obviously need some room to get that in. And I have until at least 41 weeks before we even talk about it or decide.
I hate the idea of being induced at all, but I guess it's worth a shot if it comes to that. Furthermore, it was kind of encouraging to hear-- my doc (who has done a lot of VBACs) said that she has done about 10 VBAC inductions with pit in the past and all of them ended up as successful VBACs. That's at least positive from a VBAC perspective!
