Any pregnant scientisits here?

DH and I are TTC. I am a laboratory scientist. I already know that several of the chemicals I work with (viral, radioactivity, PFA, typhan blue etc...) are not safe while pregnant. If any of you are also lab workers who are TTC or pregnant do you have a particular source you use to determine what is safe to handle and work with and what is not? I know I could look up the MSDS for each chemical but I wondered if anyone has compiled any data on this? We use BSL2 and I always doble glove, face mask, and lab coat.

Re: Any pregnant scientisits here?

  • I'm a lab tech in Genetics research.  I just used the MSDS, some of the chemicals I just looked at the label and it said on it not to be used by pregnant women.  Work in the fume hood more often as well.  I would also have someone else make up your gel solutions so you don't have to deal with Them until they solidify and are safer to work with.

  • We do have a health and safety department and i will go to them once I am pregnant. For now while TTC I am just trying to become knowledgeable and set good lab habits so that once I am pregnant I know what to avoid.  Thank you for your advice I will look up the data and stay in the fume hoods. I don't typically run gels (I'm an immunologist so FACS is my bread and butter) I am mainly worried about our fixation and permeabilization procedures so I may just call the company for that.
