Well, I bought the crayola twistables, and they worked well for the stage where he wanted to put things in his mouth (they are basically in a plastic shell), buuuuuut I later discovered they are not washable, so I don't know if you want to go that route. We're very diligent about making him sit at his table to color, but he has definitely gotten some marks on the table I haven't really been able to get out (though I admittedly haven't gone crazy trying).
We started DD out with these, but now she just uses regular Crayola.
When DD first started using crayons (around 10 months) I'd just tell her "No mouth" when she'd start to put one in. Now she never puts them in her mouth.
I've been wondering when I can introduce coloring to my LO... After reading all of your responses I feel like an over-paranoid freak! I should've started a few months ago. Do you just give your LO a blank sheet of paper and let her/him go crazy??
Also, what about finger painting?? Has anyone attempted that? If so, what paints do you recommend? i.e. easy to clean up or off of things.
I've tried crayons several times (basic Crayola) but they go straight into the mouth no matter how many times I repeat "We don't eat crayons" and show him that they draw on paper. Occasionally he'll make some marks but would rather eat/throw them. I'm scared to try markers.
I've heard you can make finger paint from vanilla pudding and food coloring but I'm worried that would teach DS that it IS Ok to eat art supplies! We have some Crayola fingerpaint that I may try in another week or two.
I like this idea also. My only concern is that if I introduce this to LO, he will think he can eat all play-do. If he happened to be at the sitter's house and they give him regular play-do, I don't want it to go straight into his mouth. I know he will probably recognize the difference in taste. I know at some point, he will understand when I explain it to him that we can't eat all play-do, but that time is a little off.

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

That's a really good idea. I am stealing it!

I'm a fountain of information, lol.
