I asked my OB about Mirena and she said she wouldn't recommend it while breastfeeding, because the uterus contracts when you bf, and there is the risk of uterine perforation. I had never thought of that, has anyone else's Dr said this?
That's weird. I would think once your uterus is back down to size (a few weeks right?) it should be ok. I was going to have it placed at my 6 week pp appt after Ellie, but my stitches weren't healed. And then we weren't having sex anyway until I got the hormone cream a few months later. And by then we had decided to just have the second baby ASAP and be done with it, so I never did get it placed. But dr h was ok with doing it at 6 weeks and I know of others that got it done then too.
You know, I just remembered too that it is one of the birth control options that is recommended during breast feeding bc it doesn't contain estrogen and effect your supply. Are you sure she didn't just mean you had to wait x number of weeks to have it placed and it is one they don't do immediately?

Nope she said its a great choice for me, once I am done breast feeding. I said "like In a year?" and she said yes. She said other doctors will do it but she doesn't recommend it. She is known for being super conservative though...
I had mine put in about 10 weeks pp. It was perfectly in place 14 months later, breastfeeding the entire time. However, sometime between 1+yr checkup and 2 yrs, it moved out of place. I have not heard breastfeeding being an issue, even after the hours and hours of online reading I have done on IUDs since my Mirena moved out of place within my uterus.
