Anxiety over potential miscarriage

So I have read the statistics that 20% of diagnosed pregnancies end in miscarriage, but it seems like lots of people on the nest / bump and IRL have had them so I seem to worry about it constantly. Like it seems way more than 20% to me. Every time I go to the bathroom (which is a lot) I fear seeing blood on my underwear. Plus I had light cramping last week and no m/s yet... just in general it causes me anxiety.

Who is with me and how are you coping?

  • This are very normal fears. Try and enjoy the fact that you are pregnant!  Are you getting your Betas drawn at all to help with your anxiety??

  • I had an early miscarriage/CP before my son was conceived.  It was awful.  So I have a lot of fears with this pregnancy, but I just keep telling myself "today I'm pregnant & I'm going to enjoy it" That's really all you can do.

Maybe try to do something to pamper yourself.  (Buy a good book, get a foot massage from DH/SO, go see a movie you've wanted to see, anything not baby related to try to get your mind off things for a while.)

  • I do the same thing everytime I do to the bathroom. I hate it. I tell myself, like PP, that today I'm pregnant and I have to enjoy it.

I have my first appointment Monday at 6 weeks. Is doing betas a normal test? Or just for those at higher risks?

  • Doing betas is totally normal, but maybe not standard.  I would just ask, it can help to ease anxiety when it's too early to see much on ultrasound.  Your fears are totally normal.  I would also remember that you do hear about a higher number of m/c's on The Bump, but these boards are not a realistic sample of the population, ya know?

Thanks for the advice. I agree with the sample idea.

  • You're definitely not alone.

I had a miscarriage in the beginning of December. Every single time I go to the bathroom now I check for blood. Every time I feel a cramp or tug I pay attention to know if it feels like the cramps I had in my m/c.

I'm very scared. So far, so good though. I have more intense symptoms than I did last time, no cramping, and no blood. This pregnancy is so different so I'm hoping that means this baby is growing the way it's supposed to.

Cramping is normal. But if it's constant or painful, call your doctor.

Beta's are not the norm. The only reason doctors do betas are if you have previous history of miscarriage, underwent infertility treatments, or are bleeding. If don't fall into these categories there is nothing to worry about with not getting betas.

There's definitely nothing to worry about if you doctor doesn't order betas, but those are not the *only* reasons that they are done.  I had them done with my last pregnancy b/c they had me come in too early for an appt and I was super anxious.  The doctor thought the numbers would help me relax, and they did!

  • Yep this is me too.  I had a c/p in October so everytime I feel a cramp or a wierd pinch I go to the bathroom to check for signs of spotting/bleeding.  So far so good but I think it is hard to not be nervous.  I am just trying to keep myself busy so that I do not think about it too much before my first appointment.

Isn't it funny how something so exciting can be so nerve wracking at the same time!  I have friends who say then never once worried about misscarrying once they found out, and I envy them!

Ditto this. I have to keep reminding myself to calm down but I have checked the TP every single time I've gone just to make sure there's no blood.

  • Same here, first pregnancy ever. And am just taking it bathroom trip by bathroom trip, I am cramp-y and just worried...I know that whatever happens will happen. And as much as I love this, I am just kind of blank too..

A little hard to explain, but it seems as if most of you are feeling it too!

    That is exactly how I feel! I miscarried This same time last year and I didnt have sore breasts nausea or any of the symptoms I have in this new pregnancy. Its nice to not feel alone! I too hate going to the bathroom or feeling any weird pains, Im so paranoid right now and cannot wait to get through this first trimester. This is why I joined the bump. We can all get through this together ( ;

When I said only I meant main - Doctors will run betas if they perform an u/s too early and don't see anything.

Got it.  That was my exact situation Smile
