DH thinks his company is going to close his office

DH is an accounts payable auditor, and he told me last night that he thinks the company is going to close the SLC office in March/April.  He feels like they will give him the option to transfer to either Michigan or Georgia.

He really does not want to move.  The main reason is that he feels we will not be able to sale our house.  The second reason is that we have established our life here in Utah.  The truth is I do not care if we have to move.  I'm confident I can find a job anywhere.

The debate we were having last night is if he should start looking for new employment now.  He feels he should stick it our till the end.  He thinks it looks good on a resume that he hung in there till the end, while the company closes its doors in here.

I think he should start looking now!  I have heard that it is easier to find new employment if you are still working for your current job, rather than waiting until you are laid off.

What are your thoughts?  I am worried he will lose his job and we will get behind on paying bills.

Re: DH thinks his company is going to close his office

  • I don't think he needs to stay...i can't imagine any other employer would care that he stayed with a sinking ship.

And i agree it's easier to find a job, while u still have one.

His other reasons for not wanting to move, are more valid.

  • In this economy I've heard from many people that's it's easier to get a new job while currently employed than if you're unemployed so if he's really against moving he'd be wise to start looking just in case.

This was my argument last night.  Truthfully, I think he feels bad leaving because his God brother is his boss right above him and he doesn?t want to leave him high and dry.  DH thinks they will offer his god brother the option to work from home.

Maybe tonight I should have him ask his god brother what he would do, if he was in DH's position.

This!  I don't think a company would down on someone for getting a jump start on finding new employment when the company is possibly moving to another state.

And he could always say he's "looking for a new challenge" or "the company is moving in a direction that doesn't align with my career path" if he didn't want it to seem like he's "jumping ship" (which he totally isn't.)

    Good luck!

  • When my company announced they were closing the SF office, they encouraged us to start looking for new jobs asap.

Other companies will not look at it as jumping ship, they will see it more as a smart move on his part. They may actually not think of it as a good thing to stick it out until the end, from a buisness prospective.

He may not want to leave the company high and dry, but that is exactly what the company is doing to him.  His first and foremost priority should be his family, and if his family will suffer if he is out of work.

    Good luck!

I completely agree! I really hope DH changes his opinion and starts looking for new employment.  Truthfully, I have actually started to look for him.

  • Yikes!! This is scary news... Hmmm... maybe he can find a job with IF benefits?  He should apply at Discover or Amex call center?? Even temporarily!  I'm sure you're nervous... it will all work out.  I think it would be cool to move out of state and if you price your house right I'm sure it would sell?? We definitely need to get together!

That is definitely a good idea to look into discover or something that offered IF benefits.  I was just talking to one of our mutual friends, and I joked it will be my luck that I will get knocked up, DH will be laid off and I will be accepted to NP school all in the same month.   I would love to move out of Utah.  Although I am pretty sure we are upside-down in our house right now.  Stupid economy!
