My husband and I are trying to conceive again and I have been thinking about my delivery. I had a c-section with my first due to size estimate. They were right and she was 9lbs 9oz. I did go into labor on my own and when I checked into the hospital I was 2 cm and 100% effaced. My doctor still recommended surgery, so who knows what would have happend if I tried to go natural. I really don't want to have surgery again, but I am terried of having a uterine rupture. I know it is rare, but it does exits. I wanted to know if any of you ladies attempted a vbac and had a rupture. Also, if vbacs are less risky then a repeat C-section, then why are so many doctors against vbacs?
Re: rupture
Rupture rate is 0.05-0.09% for those who have previously had a low, transverse inscision. You can google all this information and find great resources from the ACOG.
More hospitals are against vbacs than are doctors, in my opinion so if the hospital doesn't allow vbacs, the doctor can't do anything about it.
Honestly, I think Dr.s and hospitals don't support VBACs because it's more work. A dr. and anesthesiologist have to be in the hospital the entire time a VBAC mom is laboring. If that's at 3 am or 6pm it's a pain in the butt.
I also think they're covering their a*ses. It's much harder to be sued for a c-section that goes wrong than a VBAC.
This is exactly why they prefer not to do VBACs. Many doctors are comfortable doing c/s's because they do so many but that doesn't make them less risky. For them, it is 30 minutes and they are home for dinner (and not getting sued since as pp said, most people don't sue over a c/s gone wrong for some reason.)
It has to do with the legal standard for malpractice. Would a reasonable doctor treat the patient in the manner of the defendant dr.
With a VBAC there is a lot of room to argue that a Dr. Should have acted sooner, with a scheduled c-section unless they really screw up the complications are with in the standard of care.
Not to be nitpicky but the rate is actually about .4-.9%

Yep, pp had an extra zero in there.
