sex-selective abortion - WTF?! (vent)

I have clearly been living in a completely sheltered world where nobody would choose to end a pregnancy simply because of the child's sex.  It was just brought to my attention that this practice is increasing in Canada and there are talks about banning doctors from revealing the sex of the baby until after 30 weeks.  I had no idea!!!!  Do I really need another reason to hate fertile people?  Our government will pay for these people to end their pregnancy but won't give me one fcvking penny towards ANY baby that I would love more than anything.  Wait...I PAY for these people to end their pregnancies with m out of control taxes.  FML.

Vent over.  I've felt a vent coming on for a couple of days now.

Ughhh...I totally get hoping for one sex over another and I get that if you have two girls and you're PG with a 3rd, sure, it'd be great if #3 could be a boy. But when you're going so far as to abort a baby solely because of its sex....it's disgusting.

I'm not one to throw out the "why don't you adopt?" card but If you're that dead set on having a child of a particular sex, then pay your money and wait in line to adopt a child of that sex.

That is the most disgusting thing I've RE's in a long time. Wow!! Here I am Praying, begging and hoping for a baby of any sex and these people just decide that they don't want another girl or boy and it's okay for them to abort and start over. So disgusting. How is this normal?

It's sick. You know in some places in BC they won't even tell you the sex for exactly this reason? My friend was shocked after she moved to a small town there and was told she couldn't find out. Took her 5 years to conceive, she clearly didn't care what it was. It's become a widespread problem and it's the same reason why it's illegal to tell the patient the sex of embryos in IVF here in Alberta before transfer (and maybe this is country-wide).

I have heard of this.  It is more common with some ethnicities than others.  Many Dr's in BC already won't reveal the sex until 25-30 weeks.

Just read this!  Yes, the practise of keeping the sex underwraps until far into the pregnancy in BC is quite common.  I hope we get a lenient OBGYN...

As for revealing the sex of embryos, my clinic will.  I have no idea what the policy is for other clinics or what the 'norm' is though.

I didn't realize that the docs in BC were already withholding this information - from what I was reading, the "issue" is a little more prevalent in BC than other areas, but Ontario is quickly catching up.  I would hope that your clinic would be a little more flexible given what you ladies have already been through to get pregnant in the first place.  Using discretion should be allowed.

A/S have been illegal in India since 1994 because if it was a girl, a lot of times the woman would either chose to or be forced to terminate because of the cultural preference for boys.  Of course this has led to a lot of back alley a/s places & illegal abortions, not to mention thousands of perfect baby girls being abandoned all over the country.  In the last Indian census the male to female ratio has actually gotten worse in many places since the 94 law was passed.  The situation is very similar to that in China.  With the large amount of immigrants from Asia to Canada I'm not really surprised about this.  It's not only common in India & China, but in Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc.

Wow that is so sad and disgusting I can hardly believe it really happens.  The logical side of my brain is dumbfounded by how illogical this is.  These people do realize that they need both boys and girls to ultimately give birth to the next generation, right?  I mean it just doesn't even make sense, which makes it so much sadder that these idiots who are so self centered can have babies so easily :-(.
