Dairy allergic and ghee?

Someone suggested I try ghee as a butter substitute since the casein and lactose has been removed, but it's still make from milk. Both of my kids are dairy allergic (not lactose intollerant), has anyone had any experience with this?

Re: Dairy allergic and ghee?

  • Have not tried ghee.  What are you using butter for?  If it is a baked good, I subsitute applesauce.  There is a dairy and soy free butter you can buy made by Earth's Balance.  It is a red container.  I bought it at my Kroger in the health food/organic section.

  • I use butter (actually Earth Balance) really only for toast and maybe cookies or a birthday cake and icing once in a while. I've been using Earth Balance for a while now and I like it, I'm just trying to get away from processed foods and stick with as few ingredients as possible.

  • If ghee is made from dairy and they have a true allergy- I'd avoid it.

What are you trying to make/use it for? (baking, cooking etc.) Maybe we could help come up witha different sub?  A lot of my baked recipes call for Extra light olive oil and/or rice milk.

Yeah, after doing some research I think I'm just going to avoid it. I mainly wanted to use it on toast. I have good baking substitutes, but there's nothing like good old fashioned butter for toast:)!
