Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler Decreased Appetite

Has anyone had a stage where there normally very hungry baby/toddler hits an extremely decreased appetite stage? We have been battling some illness, 2 weeks ago we got eye drops for a virus and last week we got drops for his ears (He does have tubes and his ears are draining). He does have a cough and a runny nose. So I have been putting most of the concern that he does not feel well. He is 18 months and has always been a very hearty eater, eating everything in front of him. But lately he lightly picks at his supper, would rather eat an apple. He is drinking much more than before per his choice. Any ideas, suggestions?

  • Don't fight it. We went through the same thing with DD, and fighting it (trying to trick/bribe/force her to eat) upset all of us! DH and I finally decided that we would just ride it out, as long as we offer her food, she will not starve. And now she is eating like a horse again. Hope your DS feels better soon, no worries, he's just not that hungry with everything else going on in his little body!

  • Don't worry about it.  As PP said, keep offering food and he will eat when he's hungry. In the meantime, give him what he wants -- if he wants an apple, let him have it.

DD does this when she is sick and when she's teething. All she wants is fruit or veggies...which is great, but doesn't really fill you up. It's hard not to worry, but they will eat when they're hungry.

  • Thank you everyone so so much! I think we are also getting those two year molars in too. Lots and lots going on, relieved that I'm not alone :) I will have to look into the yogurt smoothies, thank you! Good luck with the tubes, we've had them since 10 months.
