I think Ethan is my favorite boy name. IMO, its a very strong name. However, I am curious just how popular it really is. I know its in the top 5 in the country, but I don't know any Ethans. I have two older kids in school and sports and I still can't think of any Ethans.
Is it popular in your area?
Re: How popular is Ethan?
The SSA list is the most reliable source, because it uses the actual number of babies born last year. It's #2, nation-wide. So it's very popular.
You can check out the list by state here:

I know it's popular in my area according to the SSA, however I only know of one Ethan (my BF's son).
Isabella is the #1 name in my area and I don't know any .. so it may re-appear on my list

It's fairly popular.
I work at a daycare and we have two Ethans in our preschool class. As well as two Logans in the same room.
I have a son named Ethan. I didn't think it was too popular when I named him - he is 14 - but I was wrong! When I named him in 1997, its rank was #83, but that was probably the rank from the previous year. He usually has another Ethan in his class or at least his grade, but there aren't too many. Most Ethan's I've met are a little younger. I think it peaked in popularity a few years later and maybe (?) is starting to level off by now. It is a good name with a good meaning, so if you love it, use it! Never had a bad nickname, either. Well, maybe one exception - my DH calls him "wheat thin" haha!
