Zantac question

Hi ladies! My little girl was put on Zantac today after several weeks of hell (kidding... but not really) She has been fighting eating, both breast and bottle for the better part of two weeks now. It has been SO stressful. She started out just doing it in the evenings and gradually progressed to all. day. long. She will nurse (or bottle feed) for 2 or 3 minutes then start to squirm, ball up her fists, pop off/turn her head and cry. Getting her to take more is futile! I took her to the doc last week and she of course acted perfectly fine! (I was pulling out my hair...) She gained and everythinhg... My pedi doesn't treat reflux unless the baby loses weight.

So we continued with our frustrating cycle and finally went into the breastfeeding clinic yesterday where the LC said she was definitely showing classic reflux symptoms. She sent a note over to the pedi and I was on the phone with them this morning... My baby lost 1.5oz since Friday and has been miserable for long enough!!

So I was wondering if any of you gals had experience with Zantac? We are on 0.8ml twice daily. I am hoping and praying that it is exactly what she needs. How long does it take to see a difference? It is so sad to watch her act starving and not be able to eat. She will suck on her hands and last night she even latched onto my upper arm and left a hickey she was sucking so hard! Sad mommy!!!

TIA Smile

Re: Zantac question

  • 1. You have great taste in names Wink

    2. Violet was on Zantac.  It worked for a few days and then it didn't.  If I remember correctly it started helping in a few days.  We had to switch her to prevacid because the Zantac just wasn't cutting it.  She's been a completely different baby since on the Prevacid.

Hopefully the Zantac will be what your LO needs, but just in case there are plenty of other things.  The transition from Zantac to Prevacid wasn't anywhere close to as difficult as the transition from nothing to Zantac.  Good luck and I hope your LO feels better soon!

Thank you!! Our Violet's (and Kate!) are almost the same age too Big Smile

The information you gave is very helpful! I am hoping this is our answer of course, but it is so comforting to know there are other things we can try too if it isn't. Whatever helps her feel better!!

  • our GI specialist doesn't like Zantac.  even if it works, it often stops working shortly.  Get a new med and/or see a GI doctor!  Hugs!
  • LO has been on Zantac since 38weeks gest. and also on Prilosec since 6 days adj. Zantac wasn't working on its own... so they put him Prilosec as well. However, his case was severe. He was choking and turning blue. But I def. rec. seeing a GI specialist for reflux issues. They are much more well versed with reflux than pedis are. Good luck... I know it is awful to deal with reflux.

My Violet was almost a Kate after my sister, so your girls' names make me smile.  That, and they're so stinkin adorable.  I'd love an update on how the Zantac's working for you.  Hopefully she's feeling much better!
