Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I'm in shock and awe!

Shopping trip with E this morning to HomeGoods.  Pleased with my selections I headed for the checkout where the cashier cooed and giggled at E sitting in the cart.  "How old is she?"  She just turned one.  "Is she your first granddaughter?"  *pause*  (Jaw hits the floor)  No, she's my first daughter.

OK, so I'm no spring chicken, I will be 40 in April, and although biologically I COULD be a grandmother but - REALLY?!  I'm chalking this right up with someone asking when the baby is due when you aren't pregnant.  The girl looked about 12 to me so I probably looked ancient to her but - REALLY?  Grandmother?!  I'm going to go pout and put on some wrinkle cream.

  • That sucks.  Did you correct her?

  • haha.  I'm glad you corrected her to make her feel like an idiot.  The same thing happened to my DH with DD1.  He was taking her on a walk when a woman asked if she was his granddaughter.  He corrected her and she had the audacity to say, "you started a family late huh?"  He was 29 at the time!!!! haha!

It annoys the hell out of me what some people have the balls to say.  When I was 7 months pregnant and having issues with preeclampsia, a coworker, on a daily basis, said something about how fat I was and if I was sure I wasn't have twins.  So, rude.

  • Ouch!

That happened to my dad when he brought my sister to kindergarten. He was 51, so it made sense.

  • DH and I both look like we are about 15, everyone assumes that our son is our 'little brother'. Not quite the same, but I have had similar experiences. I hope she at least apologized.

  • Wow, thats cruel! When I was about 5 months PP my STBXH's bud asked if I was expecting again (I still had a belly). Talk about rude! He knew I had just had a baby 5 months prior. Some people! Angry
  • OMG!  Well I bet she is telling all her friends how embarrassed she is.  She should be.  I was in target with my sister once and they thought I was her daughter.  People are just dumb sometimes.

  • Surprisingly we haven't had to deal with that too much yet. We live in a town where most women are grandparents (very willingly) by the time they are 35-40. I am 39 and DH is 50 (and pretty grey on top of that). Luckily a few of our friends are "older" parents too so at least we have people to hang out with and our kids can play together. My niece who is now 17 watched DD in the doctor's office while I had an appointment and she was asked if it was her DD (unfortunately teenage pregnancies here are far too common andoften planned!)

  • My mom had me at 37 and my brother at 39. She once had a cashier ask how old her grandchildren were when we were with her and said from that day on she never missed a hair coloring appointment!

  • LOL!!!!!!!! Omg, that's AWFUL!

I might have smacked that girl just out of pure reaction.

  • Lol aww! My MIL is only 44 so she gets asked a lot if DS is her son when she is out. She had DH at 20 and my MIL looks really young too. On the other hand, I've been asked on multiple occasions if DS is my little brother, I'm almost 22 and look much older lol.

  • I can see where a young person would say that. Still sucks though.

  • Ouch! I think it would be so much more likely you'd be her mother than grandmother, sheesh!

When DH and I were engaged we went to a bridal expo and one of the vendors said something to DH about "his daughter" referring to me.  I am 11 years younger than him, but come on. It actually really upset me for awhile, I've always been sensitive to remarks about our age difference.
