The majority of us here recommend waiting until at least 14 DPO or whenever your period is late to test... even if we don't all follow our own advice
true! This month I am going to try try try to wait until day after expected period (mine usually shows up at night) and stop wasting $$$ on tests!! GL!
We aren't TTC yet (this is the last TTA cycle), but with DD I was able to wait the first 2 cycles until I got AF. The third was an anovulatory one, which confused the heck out of me (I wasn't charting, only using CBEFM) and I was testing fairly frequently because AF wasn't showing up. The cycle we conceived DD I tested at 12dpo on a cheap test with a low threshhold (10 iu/l) and got a very light positive. This time around my goal is to wait until I'm supposed to get AF. My LPs are pretty consistently 16 days, though, so it's kind of a long wait. I'm sure I'll waste a few cheap tests along the way.
BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence
I have pretty regular cycles so I don't test until the day my period is supposed to arrive. Sure, it'd be great to get that BFP even earlier but most months I'd just be setting myself up for disappointment not to mention wasting a bunch of money on tests.
This was my first cycle back to temping in awhile, and it was a TTA cycle, so I was waiting for until I went past my longest LP (16dpo) which would have been tomorrow.
When we're TTC, I'll try to hold out for that same pattern. We'll see if that happens. I think I would sort of prefer to know that AF is on its way, rather than be woken up by it in the middle of the night, which is what typically occurs. Fun.
BFP: 12/20/13 EDD: 08/23/14 (discovered m/c at 8w5d)
BFP: 09/22/14 EDD: 06/06/15 (hoping for our rainbow)
I wait until my period is due. My LP is only 10-11 days though so I have a quick wait. I used to test but took my last HPT in September. I prefer to get my period rather than convince myself that my spotting is implantation bleeding, test, and get more BFNs.

This month I'm going to test with FMU on 12DPO because it's my birthday and I'm leaving a couple days after that for Vegas and if I happen to get a BFP I want to get some blood work done for confirmation before my trip.
When I first started TTC, I would POAS a few days before AF was due, now I test the morning AF should appear, I find it more disappointing to get BFN days in advance, messes with my emotional being.
The past 2 I've ended up testing too early, 10 DPO with a 10 day LP. This cycle I Oed earlier than previous so I have decided to just wait until AF or see how my temps do for the next week.
I've only jumped the gun once and tested at 10dpo. That was a fail. I usually wait until AF is a day late, but as of this cycle I'll wait until CD31 which would be my longest cycle to date and around 14 or 15 dpo.

I don't follow the 14dpo advice because I'm too impatient. I am a glutton for punishment and POAS at 8dpo. Stupid, I know. It's also a waste of money, even when using cheapo Wondfos.
I used to start testing around 10dpo, since that's when I got a BFP with my second pregnancy. With my last pregnancy, though, I waited until 12dpo since I was sure it would be a BFN.
