So I asked a pharmacist if neocitran was safe while pregnant and she said it was ok, but use sparingly. OK. then DH asked one and he said absolutely not safe.
It's pregnancy category C (which means there have been no controlled studies in humans but studies in animals have indicated that it could be unsafe for an unborn child), so I wouldn't use it unless your doctor says you absolutely should.
For future reference, you can google the name of just about any drug along with the phrase "pregnancy category" and find out what category it is.

No, don't use the category C drugs. My Obgyn actually prescribed me a category c antibiotic earlier in pregnancy and I told them I refused to take it and get me a category b drug. They told me they thought it was safe, but understood and I had no issues with the safer category b drug. Sometimes you have to be your own advocate.

Just to be the devil's advocate for a second, a lot of "approved" drugs are category C. Tums is actually pregnancy category C, but every OB I've ever heard of has said it's ok to use tums while pregnant. Sometimes drugs that are category C are rated that way because taking like 10 times the recommended dose could be harmful. That's why I say to take it if your OB says you should, but not otherwise.
I have been told that it isn't safe. Whenever I have a late night question I call 811. It is the nurse hotline. Pretty sure it is Canada wide just like 911 and 411. They are always very helpful

You're totally right. Sometime they are class C because they just haven't done a study on them yet and they could be totally safe. I just always edge on the side of caution and won't unless there has been a study. From having a miscarrage before and a high risk pregnancy last time, I don't take chances unless it's the only solution. Usually though if you ask there is a class B level alternative, so I would just try that first.

That's great info, thank you.
