Do you put your baby to bed first, and then come back out? We always started the night in the crib, and when ds wakes up, I bring him into bed with us. However now our old routine isn't working anymore, and we lay in bed with him until he falls asleep and then get back up, leaving him on the bed alone. (The mattress is on the floor). The room is babyproofed, and I have a monitor on, but Im still so nervous about him being in there, able to wake up and get up, in the dark.
Does anyone else do this? And will I stop worrying so much?

Since she's been unswaddled, she's gone into the bed with me and I leave (when I don't fall asleep). They do fine - better dark vision than you'd think. She climbed off the bed (low to the ground) successfully a couple of times before we put the bed on the floor, and she's never had a problem. (She rolled off once - while I was in there. She was annoyed, but totally fine.)
(I would worry more if it were hardwood rather than carpet. Which her room is. So I'll be putting blankets or area carpets on the floor when we put her in her own room.)
We have the crib sidecared and I put her to bed and leave. the beds are also on the floor. if she wakes up she usually sits up and cries and I run in to the room. once she sat up too close to the edge and fell off onto the dog bed. she was upset, but mostly scared, not hurt.
I usually stay in bed and read with her though. We live in a loft so we can't make much noise after she is asleep anyway. we unfortunately have a very light sleeper.
Yep! DS2's mattress is shoved in the corner, and our king-size mattress is next to it. The room is baby-proofed, and he usually just cries out and waits for me to come in if he wakes up, though he has walked to the door before. We had the same set up with my older son, but he never got off the bed when he woke - which was awesome.
Show him how to go backwards to get off the mattress (though it's really not a big deal if he rolls off, both my kids have done it), but you'll be fine. If you're really worried, you could get a video monitor.
DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)
We start LO out in his own, child-safe room on a floorbed. We don't mind if he gets up and entertains himself in his room, but he usually just wakes and crawls to the door or cries out for us. At his first real nightwaking after we are ready for bed/in bed, we move him in with us.
