Will you pronounce it like the Japanese beer: Oh-REE-on or the constellation: Oh-RYAN? We lived in Japan for awhile, so I see "beer" when I see this name.
This was a contender for my DS. I was all for it until DH decided to say that we could call him Ryan. Uh.... no. Ryan is definitely NOT a NN for Orion. So I nixed it.
We would have pronounced it like the constellation.
2 losses June '11 and July '11, forever in our hearts <br/>
and I've known one guy in his twenties with that age and an one year old baby named Orion. The guy in his twenties is probably the definition of the "coolest" guy I've ever known. Everyone loves him, he plays guitar, always calm and funny. They called him "O" because we had another friend named Ryan and some people confused them with each other, which is something I think most people will do. Provided that doesn't both you , I love the name, so I say it's awesome.
I knew an Orion in college, and I loved his name. I am however and astronomy and mythology geek. I did "use up" this name though naming a friend's cat. So, it's off the list for any future children for me going forward.

FET 9/6, transferred 1 F embie. Beta 9/15 BFN. FET#2 planned for 11/2012 put off until 2013. Surprise BFP 11/21/12!! My son was born on 7/24/13!
FET 4/28/2015 - Transferred 1 M embie. 5/6/15 BFP!
This was the very first name by DH suggested. I initially vetoed it because I thought it was too hippie for us, but then I thought about it more and decided that I like it. We're not using it though because we found a name we like better and my DH has a thing against 3 syllable names (don't ask).
Two other names I love which I think have a similar vibe are Atticus and Apollo. (although Apollo does give me slight pause as to whether it's "too much name.")
I babysat for a little boy named Orion. His parents went with the whole space theme for his room and everything. Turns out he had zero interest in space.

It makes me think of a comic book character.
What about Balthazar, Elias, Corin, Gregor, Crispus, Magnus
I don't like any of those either but I like them better than Orion.

Agreed.

It's very strong name. It is a whole lot of first name though.
It's nms, but like how underused it is.
Options: Ulysses, Moses, Buckminster, Elvis
I looooove it.
It's on my short list (DH maybe not so much).
