Preemies

Introducing Solids

Hi everyone. My son was born at 35 weeks and is now almost 5 and half months old in his true age. I am adament about introducing solids between 4-6 months and did not put cereal in his bottle or anything like that. He started on cereal 1-2 tbs by spoon at 4.5 months. He is doing well with it. I chose to start him on it then because he wasnt really satisfied with just the formula and he was expressing interest in the spoon (opening mouth etc). After his 6 month check up I want to start introducing him to solids, veggies and fruits, but am not sure if I should wait until his adjusted age reaches six months or continue using his true age in determing when to start solids. Just wanna see when others started their preemies on solids.

Re: Introducing Solids

  • I started right at 6 months adjusted. Mostly I wanted to wait for her "tongue push reflex" to go away so that we could do some real eating. She was already showing interest in what we ate and drank and grabbing for what we had in our hands. We started with cereal on a spoon until I felt like she wasnt pushing it right out and moved on to orange veg (carrot, sweet potato, squash) then white fruit and whole grains (pears, apples, bannanas, oatmeal, brown rice) then green (green beans, peas and avocado) thats where we are now, starting peaches and turkey this week.  Good luck.

  • I waited until 6 mos adjusted, but he really wasn't ready before that (no interest/tongue thrust)  It was a slow go for us, but I think you should read her cues and if she seems ready I would go for it!  6 mos actual is above 4 mos adjusted for you, so I think you should be fine.
