Will 3 Britax Roundabouts fit 3 across in a Toyota Highlander?

I was all set to get the Diono Radian (formerly Sunshine) and have been saving a old car seat for the Babies-r-us's 25% off trade-in event but now they don't carry Diono.I already have a Britax and I like it (but I never used it rear facing) so I may get 2 more Roundabouts rather than the Diono if they fit. I would save about $130 if I go with the Roundabouts. I may have to by 2 more (4 total) if my parents take over for the nanny in the fall for all 3 boys.

The Britax are 19" wide and the Diono are 17", the only other seat that I have seen that is less than 19" wide is the Cosco Serena at 18" but I think I want something more substantial. The Toyota website says the interior shoulder width of the 2nd row of the Highlander is 59.5" and the hip width is 56.5" so it would be tight.

Any other suggestions?

  • While obviously smaller than a Highlander, there is absolutely no way to get 3 roundabouts across the back of our Jetta. I'd say there is only 8-10" between the seats. You have to remember that even though hip width is 56.5, that's door handle to door handle and very rarely will the seat come all the way to the door.

From what I've heard the only one that will do it is the radian.

  • NO WAY!  I have a 2008 Toyota Highlander and 3 kids. (19 mo, 3.5 yrs, 7.5 yrs)

I have in the middle row right now a Britax Marathon behind the passenger, a Britax Roundabout in the middle and a super narrow booster behind the driver's seat. The only way to buckle the booster is to pull it away from the Britax car seat with the door open, use two hands - one to expose the seat belt plug and the  other to push in the seat belt insert. Then we push the booster back in place to get the door shut. I can't imagine trying to fit a real car seat there!

We were fine till CA changed the booster seat to 8 years/80 lbs and now we have to put the 7 year old back in a booster. My son cannot buckle his own seat belt because of this. When he was 5 we were able to make it work because the youngest was in a rear facing baby carrier car seat which had a bit of exposed space at the base. Even then, it took some practice to squeeze his hand down below the carseats and find the buckle.

I am actually considering purchasing at least one Diono so that we can fit a bit better. We've got a lot of car seat years ahead of us.

    Good luck!
