Prenatal vitamins vs...

hi all!  i recently found out that I am pregnant! yay! (first baby!) and i had a question about prenatal vitamins...i am current not on any "prenatals" per se but i have been taking a multivitamin that contains 200mcg folic acid and 7.5 mg of iron...in addition to that i am taking 800mcg of folic acid...do you think this is okay until i see my doctor and we discuss the prenatal vitamins in more depth?

thanks for all your help and suggestions! :)

  • Yes, I think that's fine for now. You're doctor may prescribe you a PNV or suggest one to take. Good luck and congrads!!

  • Opinions on this will vary, but my MW advocates additional B-complex, magnesium, vitamin D, and calcium in addition to the folic acid and iron. Also--not found in PNVs--fish oil and probiotics.

Will things be fine with what you are taking? Sure. But, every day of early pregnancy is huge development for your baby, so if you can get yourself on a quality PNV now, it makes sense to switch now. In general, doctors are not nutritionists and may not have much to say on the matter except to take one. A call to your drs office before you go in may get you his/her opinion more quickly so you can switch now, if desired.

PNVs made from whole , raw foods absorb better, as do ones where you take them throughout the day. Countrylife is one brand that does that. That said, they are too expensive for my taste, so I take Trader Joe's PNVs that are made from whole food plus supplemental magnesium, vit D, b-complex, fish oil, and probiotics.

  • Sounds perfect. My doc says minimum 1000mgs mer day of Folic Acid. (But then again she says if you take too much you just pee it out anyways :P

  • I'm taking Flinstone vitamins that contain DHA and folic acid.  I'm allergic to iodine and fish/fish oil, which is in EVERY pre-natal vitamin.  The particular Flinstone vitamin I am taking is the only one I can find to meet my needs.  My nurse practitioner told me what I'm taking is fine but I'm going to double check with my doctor next week when I see her.

  • Yes.  You are fine.  I took a regular women's multivitamin and extra folic acid until my 2nd trimester.  Once I ran out of the multivitamin, I switched to a gummy prenatal.  My doctor just wanted to make sure I was taking something.

  • take them while you can...  the iron supplement aspect of it may become intolerable if you end up with morning sickness.  Folic acid is super important and doesn't irritate sickness - I ended up taking a folic acid on its own (for the last 6 weeks or so) hoping to be able to stomach prenatals again soon.
