Doulas?

Anyone have any experience with a doula during childbirth? What are your thoughts on using them as a coach to attempt a natural, intervention-free (as much as possible) delivery. Also, any recommendations for someone who works in the Howard County area?

  • I didn't hire a doula, but my mother acted as a doula during my daughter's birth. I loved having her there to support both me and my husband. I definitely would recommend having an additional support person there who is familiar with natural childbirth. I think using a doula as a coach is an awesome idea, but I would also do your homework beforehand so you are prepared and have a plan. I found that I didn't really want to be coached during my daughter's birth, just supported.

My childbirth instructor (Ludia Sarmast) is also a doula, and she is fantastic. Good luck!

  • I did not use a doula with #1 and it was rough. I made it through med-free but it was really hard. DH didn't really understand what I wanted/needed and though he tried his best, there is really no way for him to really get it. Plus it didn't help that I was a terrified first timer.  We had one with #2 and it made a HUGE difference in my birth experience. It was much calmer. Still hurt though ;)  But I didn't feel powerless.  She helped DH coach me through each contraction, she ran out to get me ice, etc, talked to the nurses for us, so DH didn't have to leave my side.  DH wasn't all about the doula beforehand, though he went along with it to make me happy, but afterward he told me he was really glad she was there.
