Breastfeeding

Nursing question

Most of the time, my LO only nurses on one breast during one feeding and then the other breast on the next feeding. Say LO stays on the right breast for 20 minutes and then takes the left breast for only 5, should I start with the left breast for the next feeding? What if LO stays on each breast equally as long, which breast do I start the next feeding with?

Re: Nursing question

  • If your LO eats from the right for 20, then the left for 5, you should give the left at the next feeding.  I always give the last breast first to make sure it gets totally emptied.  If my DD takes both for a long time (which she does in the evening), I start with the breast that feels the fullest in the morning.

I keep a plastic hair tie on the wrist that I need to start on next feeding so I remember.

  • Make sure you alternate. If your LO starts on the left and then goes to the right, start on the right the next time.

Babies tend to suck harder at the first breast - so even if it's equal time, one side might be fuller than the other.

I keep track of it just by wearing a colored hairband on the wrist of the side I ended on. It's a lot harder to remember than you'd think, hah.
