Red lines on breast and Thrush?

Hey ladies,

My son and I have thrush and have been treating for it. Today when I woke up I noticed that my right breast has some red lines running through it, is this part of thrush? I haven't found anything on it, and the lines are slightly raised. My MIL just says it's stress, but I thought I would ask here.

Re: Red lines on breast and Thrush?

  • Have you had any other signs of mastitis?  Red streaks are a sign of infection.  Does thrush normally go through the breast like that?  I always thought it was more just the nipple area on the outside, but I've never had either so I'm not exactly sure.

  • No signs of Mastitis that I can tell, just the pain of thrush and red streaks. :/

  • Sounds more like mastitis than thrush- do you have other symptoms (fever, feel like you have the flu, hard lump, or pain in the breast more than the nipple?). I would try to see your doctor tomorrow or call tonight if you do have a fever. My LC says poke root soaks and taken orally can help fend off a bout of early mastitis- worth looking in to!

  • No fever, I don't feel like I have the flu, the only time my breast is hard is when my breast without read streaks is engorged due to pain of a cracked nipple and not feeding on that side as often.

Otherwise all the pain is in the nipple, and I know my son has thrush, his poor mouth is really white with yeast.  We see his doctor tomorrow. What are poke roots?

  • Poke root is an herb my LC recommends for mastitis and clogged ducts. Hmmm, sounds like your symptoms don't match up with mastitis exactly. What meds are you on for thrush? If you're getting worse you may need a different med. Have you tried all purpose nipple ointment which is part of Newman's thrush protocol described here: https://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-CP. To make your own OTC formulation you can mix clotrimazole (or miconazole) ointment (vaginal yeast creams) with 1% hydrocortisone and neosporin.

  • We are on Nystatin cream/oral suspension.  I'm allergic to clotrimazole, so I haven't tried that. I'll take a look at the link though, thanks.
