If your baby pulls up to stand

What do you do?  Sit near them in case they fall?  Put soft things around them to break their fall?  Just let them fall?  When do they learn to break their fall?

Just curious because DS is pulling up on everything and I'm not always right there but don't want him to keep hitting his head if he loses his balance and falls down.

Re: If your baby pulls up to stand

  • We just sit behind her when she is standing. If we can't be right there we make sure there is nothing she can pull on around her or stick her in her exersaucer or pack and play. I am too nervous to let her do it when I am not right there with her.

  • She is not breaking her falls yet so we are usually right behind her.

  • I usually sit right near him so I can grab him if he falls backwards. He usually just loses his balance and sits down.

  • If there is nothing around to hurt her we let her fall... I would rather her learn the consequences while it's safe and hope maybe she will learn to catch herself. If there are toys or hard surfaces around we are right there to catch her or don't let her stand. We also took our coffee table out of the living room for now. Originally because it was too much with her toys and the jumperoo now we assume they will stay out until she is more stable.

  • Let them fall. They learn pretty quickly to break it.
  • I let him fall backward because he usually falls on his butt.  But he doesn't even try to break his fall if going forward or sideways and idk how long it'll take for him to learn :(

  • I did at first because he was really wobbly, but then I figured he's never going to learn how to fall properly if I catch him every time so I started letting him go.  For a while I would still hover in case it looked like it might be a nasty fall face first into something but I'm a bit more relaxed about it now.  He still falls a lot and sometimes still hits his head on the floor but he's getting much better at a) getting down on his own without falling and b) falling butt first before rolling backwards or sideways.  It took N probably 2 weeks or so to learn to break his fall.  He still misses sometimes though.

  • I stay close, though it depends on where he is. Near the tile, I'm right next to him. On carpet where he is in a safer area to fall I give him more space, but I'm still close. He is getting better, but also more daring! He loves standing up! I won't leave him anywhere he can pull up without me. He moves too fast up!

  • I just let him fall at first. He would throw himself backwards for awhile.  After a week or two he figured out how to get down without falling. It was cute to watch him figure it out. He was sliding into the splits almost for awhile.
