Housework/Cleaning Poll

DH and I still seem to struggle with keeping up with everything around the house. I was always good with fighting through exhaustion and pulling all nighters. I was an art/design major in college and had to go with 2,3, and 0 hours of sleep all the time but now it seems like I just can't do it and I feel like such a failure! So I thought it'd be good to see how and what everyone else does.

1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what?

2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?

3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime?

4. Do both of you work? One of you work?

5. What time do you try and get to bed each night?

6. Do you take a nap during the day?

7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often?

  • 1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what? I do most of the cleaning, but DH pitches in and does a lot too. He will straighten up and usually vacuums (I hate our vacuum). I almost always clean the bathroom and do the deeper cleaning. We take turns doing dishes (usually one of us will clean up dinner while the other gets E in the tub) Today while I was out shopping he striped the sheets in our room and Evan's and did a bunch of other laundry. Last weekend we had my parents over for dinner and we cleaned the entire house together. He did the living room (dusted/vacuum) I did the bathroom and we did the kitchen together.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?  I used to when I stayed home. Now I will usually give the house a good once over on my day off during the week and then on the weekend I will do one room more of a deep clean. I typically wipe up the bathroom a few days a week while Evan is in the tub.

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime? As I said above, usually my day off. Evan likes to help clean too. (he loves to use the swiffer!) During the week I usually straighten up after he goes to bed (toys, mail laying around etc)

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work? Both FT

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night? around 11

    6. Do you take a nap during the day? ha, nope! I can't nap... unless I'm really sick.

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often? Nope. I would love to hire a cleaning lady... but just can't justify paying someone to do something I'm totally capable of.

  • 1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what?
I do everything.  Unless DH happens to be around and occasionally does dishes after dinner, or when I'm in a crunch w party planning and he scrubs A toilet.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?  no

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime?
During the day, and after they go to bed.  Mostly while one kid is in preschool.

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work?  I am SAHM, DH goes to the office

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night?  11/11:30

    6. Do you take a nap during the day?  Never

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often? Never

    1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what?

Nope, I do all the picking up and cleaning. If we are having someone over or a party or something, dh will help by sweeping and mopping the kitchen floor.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?

Nope. I do get on and off the fly lady band wagon though

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep?

The kitchen I clean up daily while dd eats breakfast. I scarf my food down and then spend 10-15 minutes cleaning. I've missed some days bc of Clayton now, but since it is done almost daily it stays clean. I try and get dishes done while she finishes eating dinner.

Upstairs bathroom I do while she is in the bath. Again, it stays clean bc I give it wipe downs a couple times a week.

Downstairs bathroom is a half bath, so it is quick. It is right off the kitchen (weird!) so I can do it while she is coloring (I have her color in her high chair still to contain where the crayons can go) maybe once a week.

Living room gets picked up randomly. It is where all her toys are so sometimes it is a disaster for days and other times we pick up as we go. When I was at work it was much messier bc dh never picked up and sometimes I would be too tired when I got home.

Upstairs bedrooms I clean once the dog hair and dust get bad enough to bug me. Embarrassing, but true. It's just always at the bottom of my cleaning list and gets neglected.

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work?

I work ft and dh works pt, but one of us is almost always home. Honestly, I feel our house would be easier to maintain if we both worked the same schedule and she was in daycare. Instead, I would work and dh and dd would make a mess all day. Or if dh helped clean more...

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night? Now, anytime! But before, I would say 11pm or midnight. Dd slept till 7.

    6. Do you take a nap during the day? Now I do if I can. Before Clayton, no. Once he is on a schedule I won't again.

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often?

No but I am considering one for when I go back to work until Clayton sleeps better, maybe until 6 months old when we will do CIO again if needed. I just don't know I want to pay when I could do it, and I would probably clean for the cleaning lady...

    1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what?  I do most of the interior cleaning, because I like to and I like the way that I do it :).  DH will vacuum and mop when he is home with the kids.  He will also scrub the shower when it needs it and will do just about anything else if I ask him, but again, I like to do it.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?  No

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime?  I usually do most of it in the morning, when I have the energy and the boys are playing.  It is easier when DH is home too, so he can entertain them if needed.  Evan likes to "help" and Andrew likes to watch.

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work?  Yes, DH works FT (nights for 2 shifts) and I work 28 hrs/week.

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night?  9ish

    6. Do you take a nap during the day?   Nope...I did when Andrew was a newborn, or I would not have survived....I would take an hour nap at the beginning of their afternoon nap.  I do not nap now though, I have never been good at napping.

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often?  No, we make do with it and I actually like cleaning, most of the time.  I would not mind hiring someone like twice a year to do a deep clean, but not probably until I am back up to FT.

We do the best we can.  We have a pretty small house, so it is managable.  This is one of the main reasons that I told DH that I did not want to buy a bigger house.

    1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what?
I do most of the inside chores.  DH will usually do anything I ask him to do but most of the time it's easier to do it myself, lol!  DH takes care of the lawn, keeping the wood pile stocked and the garage clean.  He also cleans the litter box and takes the garbage out.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?
Not a set schedule, except for getting the garbage ready.  I try and do laundry on Friday nights so it's done.  I also try to get a deep clean on the kitchen done on Fridays after the girls go to bed.  Most other chores like dusting and vacuuming get done sometime over the weekend.

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime?
A lot gets done during naps on the weekends and after the girls are in bed during the week.

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work?
DH & I both work FT

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night?
    9:00-9:30

    6. Do you take a nap during the day?
They frown upon that at work ;)  On the weekends I don't, I'm not much of a napper, but I try to relax for a little bit while the girls are napping.

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often?
Nope.  I would love to have someone come do a deep clean maybe once a month, but I have no plans for that to happen.

  • I feel like our house is never clean. Or rather, it's clean, but always cluttered. I look at my parents' house, how every room is organized and you can see the floor, free of dust, and I just think,"Some day....."

    1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what? DH and I split things up. He usually dusts and vacuums the living room, does his own laundry, and the dishes each night (I usually cook, so it's always been our trade-off). I clean the bathroom, kitchen, and my clothes, plus towels/linens/etc. DS's laundry usually is only one load a week, so I throw that in on Sunday to get things ready for the rest of the week.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?  No. I tried, but our schedules end of getting wacky, and it throws everything off. When life isn't too crazy, we'll typically do a quick clean-up on Friday nights so that we can focus on enjoying ourselves for the rest of the weekend. If not, we just do things as we have the time and energy for them.

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime? DH typically keeps DS occupied as I try to do things around the house, or he'll just hang out whereever I am.

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work? I work full-time, DH works when he can, but it's usually most days of the week.

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night? By 11pm the latest, but I typically strive for 10pm.

    6. Do you take a nap during the day? Only when I absolutely can't keep my eyes open, or I'm not feeling well.

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often? My mom will take DS for me if there's a project I want to get done and DH is not home (like during the summer when I lose him to soccer reffing). I would love to someday have a cleaning service - maybe if we hit the lottery and get a bigger house. Until then, we don't have the money for it, and even if we did, I couldn't justify the cost.

The thing about cleaning and having kids is that no matter how great of a job you do, it will be messed up within a matter of minutes!  It's so frustrating because you can never really get ahead!

    1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what? I do most of the indoor things, DH does outdoors stuff like mowing, trimming.  I do pretty much all the other cleaning.  It's almost easier if I just do it, since then it's done to my standards.  I vacuum, do a load in the DW, and do laundry every other day, sometimes every day.  I can't handle if it accumulates, too overwhelming for me.  I do dishes throughout the day.  I try to make our bed in the am, and I never clean the bathrooms as much as I should.  For a long time, I told DH that he needed to put his clothes away but it was put off for months and months and I blew up over Christmas about that one so I just did it and put them away per load now.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?  Just that garbage and recyclables go out on Thursday nights.  If the house hasn't been vacuumed in 2 days, you can definitely tell.  I usually start thinking about 4 each day, that I need to try to get the house in somewhat okay looking shape before DH gets home around 6, which is kind of silly.

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime? I do some things during the days, Jules loves the vacuum so she likes to "help."  I do very little after she goes to sleep, since I usually fall asleep then too.  I feel like I need to get something accomplished during naptime, when in reality I want to do absolutely nothing but veg out and watch Bravo.  Bigger jobs I'll do when he's home or she's preoccupied with something or asleep.

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work? I SAH, DH works and coaches after work.  I feel like keeping the house clean would be much easier if we weren't here all day, everyday.  Plus we have a lab, so there's the dog hair issue too.

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night? Around 9-9:30.  Seriously as soon as Jules goes to sleep, half the time I fall asleep when I'm trying to get her to.

    6. Do you take a nap during the day?  Nope, I'll nap maybe 2x a year.  That's just how I've always been.

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often?  I wish!  It would be amazing to have someone come in and clean, even once a month for a deep clean!  Except I'm crazy enough that I would probably feel like I need to clean before they came :)

Even though I hate cleaning, I always feel so much better about things when the house is clean, like I've gotten something accomplished for the day.

  • 1. Who does what around the house? Do you split things? If so what? I'm pretty lucky:) When DH is home he usually does the laundry and cleans. When I'm home, I do it. We both know what needs to be done and we do it. DH has shift work so he tends to have days off during the week, which helps. I usually cook and he usually does the dishes.

    2. Do you have a schedule where you clean certain rooms or chores on certain days each week?  Nope, we just try to keep our heads above water with a toddler hurricaine going around. But I try and do a "big cleaning" on the weekends which is the bathrooms and washing the floor by hand. The other rooms get cleaned daily.

    3. When do you do them? At night after LO's are asleep? During naptime? Usually at nap time when I'm not working or after she goes to bed. If she's playing nicely by herself, I'll take advantage of that time as well.

    4. Do both of you work? One of you work? Both FT, DH also has a PT job as well.

    5. What time do you try and get to bed each night? around 10

    6. Do you take a nap during the day? No, I work. But on the weekends I don't b/c I wouldn't get anything done!

    7. Do you have any help? Mom, MIL, friend, cleaning person? If so how often? No. My mom and dad live with us but they have their own living area/apartment. But mom will cook and clean up sometimes which is a HUGE help. She also does the grocery shopping which is a major task gone:)
