I went to the doctor at 5 weeks 6 days because of cramping. They did an u/s and found a yolk sac(measuring right at 6 weeks), but no fetal pole. She ordered a blood test for Hcg levels. My progeterone level was 23 and my first hcg level was 25, 685 (Tueday at 11:30 AM). I did a repeat test on Thursday at 8:00 AM (little less than 48 hours). My hcg levels were 34,937, so they did not double. I go back on Monday for another u/s at 6 weeks 5 days.
Is is likely that I will miscarriage or is it common to see no fetal pole?
Re: No Fetal Pole
I think once beta numbers reach a certain point, they don't double, but will continue to rise.
It is strange that your numbers are so high but there isn't much to see on the U/S.
It's possible you're not as far along as you think, though I don't know why your numbers would be so high if that's the case. Fingers crossed everything is okay!
I just stopped taking the pill on December 10 and my LMP was December 14. I didn't even think it was possible to get pregnant that fast and have no clue when I would typically ovulate. However, during the u/s the sac was measuring at 6 weeks. Are u/s always correct? My doctor said she couldn't tell me either way...said it was 50/50. She did not seem very hopeful though.
Can my numbers continue to increase even if my body is preparing for a miscarriage. Could this be a blighted ovum? Or is there another reason why I would have high numbers, but not see a fetal pole?
Was it an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound? If you're bigger, abdominal scans might not work well early on--that's my experience. At 5w6d NOTHING could be seen abdominally on me, but transvaginally we saw the yolk sac and pole. At 7w1d we could only see the gestational sac abdominally but a transvaginal scan showed us the baby and heartbeat.
Good luck, keep us updated!

I had an U/S at 5w5d and all they could see were gestational and yolk sacs. I went back at 7 weeks and there was a healthy little peanut!
I hope this is the case for you, best of luck.

Thanks for the support.
Yes, it was a transvaginal u/s. I am average weight for my height.
I've been reading a lot of posts similar to mine and the results seem to be 50/50. I did read that with my hcg levels so high, that there should have been a fetal pole.
Sweets11 - Were your hcg levels high too at the time of your 5 wk u/s?
Although easier said than done, try to stay positive. Since you JUST came off the pill, you could have ovulated at any time -- your body wasn't regular. Hang in there and wait until your next u/s before you worry.
P.S. -- I've said this a millon times before but i REALLY hate when Dr's do these early u/s becuase things are so little at that point. At 6 weeks, the baby has only been developing for 3 in actuality. This happened to my sis and they were calling her a "threatened abortion" becuase they didn't see a heart beat at 5 weeks...meanwhile she is now 33 wks pregnant with my nephew.

It's common not to see the fetal pole that early so please don't be nervous! My doc won't even do an u/s until after 7w for that very reason.
When do you go back for another u/s? A week makes a HUGE difference this early on.

I'm going to hope for the best. Follow-up is tomorrow morning (6w5d). I will let everyone know the result.
At 5w5d, we saw a gest sac, a yolk sac, but no fetal pole with DD.
The next week we saw her heart beating. Good luck to you!
