Need formula advice

I have 4 week old twins, boy and girl. My little boy is having a really hard time with gas and was on Enfamil powder Newborn (I breastfed for 2 weeks but it was too much and I had to stop...many, many tears have been shed over this.) I called our pediatrician and he suggested switching to Enfamil Gentlease and said I should stop using powder and use liquid concentrate. I wasn't able to find concentrate so I bought the ready to use liquid (it expensive $7.50/32 oz) The ONLY store I can find this in is WalGreens and they don't carry a big supply. I did some research and found that Enfamil does not make Gentlease in liquid concentrate. Upon further research I fould that Similac does make their gentle formula in liquid concentrate. I just started Gentlease yesterday and can already see an improvement. This is going to cost me a fortune though and is almost impossible to find although I can order it if I can get a big enough supply to last me til it arrives. Would you switch to the Similac gentle formula? Do think I am going to really mess his belly up if I make that switch? I was SO planning on breast feeding that I didn't do any research on this stuff.

  • Do you know why he wants you to use the liquid? we started with liquid but switched to powder, its just too expensive! I breastfeed but supplement with formula. We just switched from Enfamil infant to Enfamil soy and the boys are alot less gasey already! We switched due to ezcema but its had a bonus with a ton less gas and spit up.

Back to the powder vs liquid...liquid is safer you can google info on all that but as long as you are careful making it your babies should be fine. I think more people use powder than liquid. We just keep the premade liquid bottles on hand to take if we go anywhere with them as emergency food.

  • The dr. said that powder can be harder for a baby to digest so if you have a baby who is already having problems then it is smarter to have them on a liquid.

  • I'm not sure about the liquid, but at about a month old, we had to switch one of the girls to Similac Sensitive and it REALLY helped. She was less gassy, lessy fussy all around. We get it at costco, cheaper there then anywhere else I can find.

  • I have seen the enfamil gentlease ready to feed (liquid) at toys r us and babies r us.  Do you have one of those near you?  My son also did better with the liquid formula although we had him on Similac alimentum which is also expensive.  I recommend signing up with enfamil and Similac and they will send you coupons/checks.  Also check out the swap spot board for formula checks.  Good luck!

  • We were using the powder similac sensitive and it made our girls constipated and they were always fussy and gassy.  We switched to the ready to use liquid similac sensitive and it made a world of difference.  We get it from Diapers.com.  Which btw is a great site for diapers and all things baby.  Also amazon.com and BJ's Club sells it by the 6 or 8 pack case for between 40 and 45 bucks.

  • Even with DS we always used ready to feed after I was done bf'ing. With the girls, we had to have them on alimentum for awhile, originally it was nutramigen (enfamil's version). I never liked enfamil for our kids for some reason, they all seem to have issues with it. The girls are now on the regular similac after dealing with severe reflux and are doing great. We can get cases at babies r us and I have no problem finding it in cvs or our local grocery store (or the soy version of theirs in ready to feed either). I also get a 20% off coupon to babies r us all the time or a $5.00 off coupon. Good luck!!
