How long was your labor? Clicky Poll

So the post from yesterday with the ultrasound pictures (ahh, the memories!) got me thinking about being pregnant... which led to me thinking about labor and delivery.  So how long were you in labor with your LO?  Feel free to elaborate or share more details. :)[Poll]

Re: How long was your labor? Clicky Poll

  • I was induced, and my labor, from start to finish (birth), was almost exactly 12 hours.  It actually felt quicker than that.

  • I was wondering this the other day: does labor officially start once there are consistent contractions?

  • It was 5 weeks of prodromal labor (contractions 3-10 minutes apart all day every day but stopping at night).  Then 18 hours from the time my water broke to his birth.  It suuuuuucked.  I should have asked for an induction.

From what I remember from my doctor, labor officially begins when contractions are regular and strong enough (usually 2-3 mins apart and lasting 30 secs or more) to cause the cervix to dilate and start to efface.

I am sure you will get somewhat of a variety of answers to this question though.  Some women are "in labor" for days before they give birth.

45 minutes.  Tried the induction for 45 minutes, but never felt a contraction.  Then had a c-section.

  • I woke up to irregular contractions on Saturday around 8:30, had them all day. At 4 am Sunday morning I they got intense and very close (2-3 minutes apart) so I went to the hospital only to find out I was only 2cm dialated!! I had to get hooked up to an IV because I was GBS+. Then my midwife got there at 10am and DH told her I hadn't slept in over 24 hours so she gave me morphine. I slept for 45 minutes. Then a few hours later I was dialated enough for them to give me an epi and start pitocin because my contractions were slowing down. Then I slept REALLY GOOD! DH was in and out of the room going home to let the dog out. Around 7pm I was checked and was close to 7 cm dialated. The midwife asked to break my water i said ok...because I had had enough. Then things really started to get going. I was pushing by 9:30pm, pushed for about 2 hours and DD was born 11:32 Sunday on the day she was due.

I hear ya! I guess my thinking was that those of you who had a c-section or didn't go into labor would choose "6 hours or less." So sorry- I shall never forget SS again, lol. :)

  • Technically, I was only in active labor for 12 hours, but I count the 5 hours of inactive labor leading up to it because the contractions were consistent, never stopped, and only increased in intensity as compared to the BH contractions I had been having for the 2 weeks prior.

  • Ugh, longer than 30 hours unfortunately.

My water "broke" (it was like a trickle) on Saturday afternoon. I stupidly never actually realized what was going on until Sunday afternoon when I was like, "Hey, maybe my water broke!" I just had damp panties for like a day; for all I knew it could have been discharge. So anyway, went to the hospital Sunday night, started pitocin at 9pm Sunday night. Didn't get my epidural until 8pm Monday night.

DD was born 6:44 am Tuesday morning. So yeah, 33 hours on pitocin, and about 60 hours after my water broke. Brutal.

  • I went in on Friday for an induction due to Pre-E. They inserted cervadil at 3 pm and by 5pm I was having contractions. But not really "in labor". Although they did make me really uncomfortable and by 9 pm I was practically in tears. (With DD, pre-E again, I had cervadil as well and didn't contract at all while waiting for the pitocin.)

Started pitocin at 5:30 am and DS was born at 10:54 am after 17 minutes of pushing.

  • 46 hours from the start of contractions to birth.
  • So I was in labor for 6 hrs and then they did the section.  She was breech and we had a scheduled section for my due date but Hannah couldn't wait.

    This exactly!
  • I have to admit that I don't actually know how long was in labor in total. I never felt contractions and had dilated to 5cm! We went the hospital because I just felt "off" when we found this out. Needless to say, my OB was called and I was admitted at 6am that Sunday morning. I didn't feel any contractions until my OB broke my water at 10am, but I'd already had the epidural places, so they gave me the pain meds and I was good until the 3rd dosage of meds wore off around 7pm after an hour of pushing and having back labor. I pushed for another 2.5 hours (total of 3.5 hours pushing) and they were born at 9:46pm and 9:52pm, only 6 minutes apart. The last few hours was agony. And I'm totally not afraid to admit it. I was in back labor, DS was laying on my bladder and urethra so the cathater (sp?) was super annoying and I felt every thing. But I thank God I didn't have to have a c-section to deliver them and feel super lucky I was able to do it.

  • I had had uncomfortable, but not painful contractions for a day or two before.  At 12:45am, I woke up with what felt like a painful contraction.  A few minutes later, another.  H started to time them and they were already consistent and about 5 mins apart.  He was born at 11:01am, so I generally consider my labor to have been 10 hours long start to finish, and don't really count anything from the couple days before.

Man, it really all feels like such a blur to me now...sigh...

  • I was induced but skipped cervidil, they broke my water at 7am, started a stronger dose of pit at 7:30 am the contractions were horrible!!! I made it to 5 centimeters (I was 2 when I walked in the door) and I got the epi at 11am, I was 10 cm at 2:30p but didn't push until about 4:45 (weird, I know) had baby Jason at 5:16p. I've never actually told anyone how many hours I was in labor because I never knew when labor actually started.

    Edit:wrong time.

So from the start of pitocin until birth I guess it's about 10 hours?

  • I was induced because I was 4 days late and about 4 cm but no contractions.  From the start of pitocin to birth was 3.5 hours.  Pretty easy.

  • Exactly one week overdue with Lil(first baby here).  I went in for induction at 7am and about 15 min after I got to my room 7 other active labor Mommas showed up to the ward.  I was last priority...ugh.  I asked for an epidural but I think I got it after I transitioned.  But I am glad I did get it though.  I pushed for two hours and the Dr. did A LOT of stretching to avoid cutting me.  Very thankful but am giving props to the Mommas that went natural!

    8 hours total for me.

    8 pound 7ounces 21 inches

  • Mine was 28 hrs... ending in a C-section

I was induced and from the start of piocin to baby being born it was about 8 hours. Easy peasy!

Were you already dilated and effaced when you went in for your induction?  As I said above, it took about 12 hours start to finish for me.  When I went to the hospital, I was already 4 cm and 80% effaced.  They broke my water first, contractions started, but of course they like them to be strong and regular, so that's when I got the pitocin.

It's funny because, looking back, I thought the whole process was pretty "easy" as well, but I am sure while it was happening I didn't think so, lol.  It's strange how your brain blocks certain things I guess. :)

Wow, good for you that you birthed your twins vaginally!  That's awesome.  Sorry to hear you pushed for so long though... ouch.

I went through something similar.  Sometimes they have you wait a bit once you reach 10 cm (called laboring down) so that your body naturally does some of the work in pushing the baby down the birth canal.  It can help the mother conserve some energy for the real pushing later on.  Maybe that's the "technique" they used for you?

Yes, that's what my nurse called it. I had never heard of it but it seemed to work well since I only remember pushing a few times.

Haha thanks. DS kinda slammed into the birth canal and his system was kind of in shock after he was born. With my first baby (DD), I pushed for 30 minutes but it would have been less. She got stuck for about 10 minutes. And she was the smaller of my two. 7 lbs 8 oz and DS was 9 lbs .4oz and didn't get stuck.

  • Contractions started at 4:45 am at 40w6d (41w2d according to my first OB).

Got to the hospital at noon and was barely a 2.

    I was still at a 3 at 3pm, managed to get to a 10 at 3:25.

DD was born at 3:32 pm.

    So... Less than 11 hours.

Wow, that's amazing! Did you get an epidural, or were you just that lucky? I was stuck at a 6 for awhile, then got the epi, relaxed for a bit and dilated to a 10 fairly quickly after that but not THAT quick! :)

That is fast! Yes, did you get an epidural? That's what happened to me. 24 hours on pitocin and I was still a 2. Yelled at the nurse for an epidural and was pushing 9 hours later...huh, so I guess it still took a while after the epidural. But at least I didn't care anymore! Smile

  • No epidural!

I had gotten IV pain meds, and those only made me SO loopy, but did not help the pain. I felt okay up until 3, but that 30 minutes going from 3 to a 10 was insane. It felt like my whole body was lit on fire.

She came in and asked if I wanted an epi, and I said yes (I originally wanted a natural). She had wanted to check me first, and it hurt SOO bad. Why? Because DD's head was RIGHT there and almost crowning. She was like... uhhh.. No epi for you. (DH had went to the bathroom and as he was coming back he heard me screaming from the check.) I was still in triage at this point.

So in the time we ran down the hallway.. and about two pushes in the room.

    She was out!
