6+ month and now latching problems?

Just wondering if anyone has dealt with intermittent latching problems that started later?  Everything was going fine bf wise until about a month ago when I started getting clogged ducts.

I don't know that it is related, but around the same time I was having problems where baby was having latching problems, mostly in the middle of the night and was giving me blisters.  Mostly he is just fine, but every now and then it just hurts because of some weird friction.

I just came down with mastis, also, along with more clogged ducts.  Again, not sure if it is related, but the clogged ducts, mastis, are on the right side, but the blisters and bruising are on both sides.

  • Does he have teeth coming in? DD1 would sometimes latch weird for a short time when she had a new tooth coming in. Are you pumping in addition to nursing? Recurrent clogged ducts can be caused by an oversupply. If you are pumping too, but have the option to cut back, you might see if that helps.

  • I agree that it sounds like teething. Blisters can cause your breast to not drain in certain areas, which causes the plugged ducts, which can turn into mastitis.

I'd try letting your LO chew on a cold wet washcloth, or a cold teether, for a few minutes before nursing. Once a tooth pops through, change position each feeding so if the tooth rubs, it isn't on the same spot each time. This should keep the blisters down and hopefully help avoid the plugged ducts.

  • I agree with the PPs that teething could be the culprit.  Every time DD cuts a tooth her latch is off for a little bit until she gets used to the new tooth.
