This is my first, so I don't personally know but...
My friend is serious about baby carriers -- paid to join a baby-wearing group that lets your try out different carriers for two weeks at a time so you can see what works for you. Anyway, she's tried them all (literally) and only likes the Ergo and the Moby.
We LOVE ours!!! I wish we would have bought it to begin with rather than our Bjorn, but I hadn't even heard of it when I was pg with dd.
It is SO comfortable. We bought it to use with our toddler and she feels SO light in it. DH uses it primarily right now since I'm huge, and he never has any complaints about sore back or neck.
I have a bad back as well, and the few times I did use it, I never had ANY pain issues with it. It's just a better all around structure.
Plus, it's much more versitile and will last WAY longer than most carriers out there. Definitely worth the money in my mind.
Had an Ergo, Hotsling, Bjorn, and Moby. DD HATED the ergo, she likes facing out and not facing us, the world is just to busy for her not to see it. I adore my Bjorn (there are many different types) and hotsling for when she was tiny. My Moby was good for when she was small. I will try the Ergo again, but I am not a fan and it was so not worth the moeny for me.
This is also my first ... but I have done a lot of research (gone to a baby carrier workshop..ect) and one of my firends is OBSESSED with babywearing. She said the beco is the best carrier she has ever purchased. It is similar to the ergo but has a better infant insert. Also, at the class I went to, the store sold both the beco and the ergo and several people said they perfered the beco.
As far as the positioning goes, it's true that it's not meant to face baby outwards. But I've read that people just take a piece of cloth or something and tie the crotch really tight and that works to "convert" it to a forward facing position.
Since we didn't get ours till dd was almost 2, we have only used it in our backs, which is just awesome. DH was so convicned we should get a big backpack carrier and I kept telling him no, we need the Ergo. He finally admitted that I was right
I've been researching this for months, and I've only ever heard raves for the Ergo baby! I just got mine off of ebay for $96, but I've seen them as low as $85 on there.

Re: 2nd time mamas- Ergo Carriers?
I still used my MobyD and my Ergo (though I used it more when DD was older) I love both!
I hate the hotsling, peanutshell and 2 Bjorns I have all since sold to some sucker.
I must know if you fell off the horses while doing gymnastics.

Unfortunently no, I am not a vaulter
I have, however, done a couple of good flips while flying through the air after been thrown!

Hilarious. I used to vault, back when I was young and fearless and didn't mind somersaulting off a cantering horse.
I've been considering an ergo, nice to hear positive reviews. I've also been looking at a beco, but I don't think you get the same support from it.
