Bunk Beds

We're budgeting for Will's 'big boy' room that he'll move into later this year. I'm really liking the look of bunk beds and they seem so practical. He would stay on the bottom bunk for now, but I could see it being handy in the future for sleepovers and possibly sharing a room with a sibling. Is there any reason I'm not thinking of for why we shouldn't spend the extra $250ish on bunk beds?

Also, where did you get your toddler's bed? I really like the look of this one from Target, but DH isn't sure about buying furniture from Target.

I agree with you about benefits of bunk beds. However, just to try to help out here are some things that I guess could be of concern. 

 

- You'll have to buy two bedding sets.

- You might have to keep a closer eye on LO when he's playing I'm there when rs still little in case he wants to climb. (But I guess you could take off the ladder.)

- Do you have a ceiling fan? That might be an issue. 

 

Thats all I've got. I'd probably go for it!

We've done staples on 3 kids in the last couple weeks from ceiling fan + bunk bed incidents! Which is weird because I had not been on shift for any before.

It says it's made of hardwood so I'd think that's good. I like that they can be two separate beds at first too. We're looking for something similiar but they won't be bunked anytime soon. Emily was at a place that had bunk beds and she could get up (close to the ceiling fan!!) but couldn't get down and at one point got her legs stuck in the ladder and was hanging upside down. =( Scary.

ikea has a nice set that looks like similar for 50 bucks more. for whatever reason, I'd rather buy from ikea.

My kids will never have bunk beds, I don't think.  My bf when I was little cut her head on my brothers ceiling fan on his top bunk.  We were older, too, and knew to watch out for it.  Just scary and a pretty big liability.

Jakob hit his head on a ceiling fan from a bunk bed but it just gave him a small red welt.  Maybe it was just a cheap fan. 

I think bunk beds really depend on the kid.  Layna would do fine with bunk beds, she doesn't like climbing and so she would stay on the bottom bunk.  Jakob would have climbed to the top and try to do a flip off it, or something, so we waited till he was 5 to get them. 

We had the metal frame from IKEA, it was probably $200 or less.  The cool thing is that if your H is handy, they can easily be converted.  DH cut out the bottom bunk and converted it to a loft bed.  Then Jakob got sick of climbing a ladder to get into bed, so again H cut it into a regular bed.  Once cut, there was no going back.  But we got three beds and 4 years out of >$200.

DS loves his bunk beds.  LOVES.  He has no desire to climb onto the top bunk, but if he did, we'd just planned to remove the ladder until he was a bit bigger.  He's a pretty cautious kid in general right now when it comes to safety things, so I felt comfortable getting him the bunks.  We don't have a ceiling fan in his room. His floors are carpeted - I'd be a bit more nervous if he had wood floors.  

It wasn't cheap, but we got the PBK Camp set.  I looked at pretty much every set out there, and the PBK ones were always getting the highest marks for quality.  The beds are awesome and totally sturdy.  They come apart, so later on, we could separate them if we wanted to.

Ditto the pp about double the bedding cost, though!

I was going to suggest that as well.  But some kids don't need a ladder

It's not a guaranteed thing, but if you do decide on bunk beds, there are always nice ones on Craigslist. Then again, maybe that's a sign, LOL!

We're going to get DD bunk beds in a couple weeks. She's been wanting them for years and I'm finally at the point where I can trust her to be on top and I think DS won't fling himself off the top. DD is very cautious and I don't see her flinging herself off into the ceiling fan. The plan is to have the ceiling fan off anyways.

I had bunk beds when I was little, until one day I was on the top bunk when the whole thing collapsed. Luckily nobody was on the bottom bunk. I wasn't hurt, but it scared the bejesus out of me. This was a really cheap metal frame. Make sure whatever you get is nice and sturdy.
