We have a new iMac and I have been prompted a lot to use iCloud to sync with my Macbook and iPhone. Not sure if it is a good idea or not. I don't find it too troublesome to connect my phone occasionally to sync up and my Macbook shares the drive of my iMac when I need to get something... I don't know if iCloud is a great thing I am missing out on or not really necessary... what is your take?
Re: Mac users- do you use iCloud?
The catch is hey only give you 5 megs free. I filled that up on my first sync =/
So, you have to pay for more space.
Interesting. I have a ton of stuff on my phone and haven't had a problem yet.
Backstory-- I was so ticked yesterday when I tried to make a DVD for a video of DS3's birth day. I called support asking where iDVD was and they said it should be there.. umm, no, not here... and I then called another # they gave me and was told they are no longer including iDVD and soon it won't work with any of the apps. They said I could buy a 3rd party source (wth, I just spent A LOT of money on this iMac and I am not interested in patching in a 3rd party source). Anyway, they told me not to use DVDs anymore, stressing their finite lifespan, and to use streaming video and iCloud... no thanks, I am not yet interested in storing all of my family videos online or use the newly developed technology in that way. And now I realize it's just another way to more $$. Ultimate resolution was I can buy iLife with iDVD, but eventually it won't be supported.
I have an older Mac, and I use the predecessor to iCloud (iDisk) to backup my email, address book, and other data. I tend not to keep a lot of photos or video media on my machine, otherwise I would run out of space fast! I have multiple backups of files that I don't use that much -- a lot is on my iDisk, but I also have copies on CD, DVD, and an external hard drive.
You should be able to customize what types of files back up/sync to which devices, but I haven't work specifically with iCloud. But I do know that I am able to sync files between my iMac and MacBook Pro, and I can customize what is or is not on my iPhone. I would be surprised you didn't have the same ability to customize with an iPad.
I'm not surprised that they are removing iDVD from the new MacBook Pros. Since those are geared more towards professional users, I would bet those folks are buying 3rd-party professional grade apps for that purpose.
