Breastfeeding

Is this constipation?

My DD seems to be grunting a lot today and has had fewer BMs (2-3 compared to her typical 6 or so). It's also a darker green color and less seedy than before. She doesn't seem to be in pain or distress and is still feeding normally, but she's straightening out a lot and seems to be pushing a bunch.

Is this something that just happens as their digestive tracts gear up?

Re: Is this constipation?

  • constipation is poop that is hard, usually small balls of little pebble like poops.

if her poo is softer than toothpaste and usually mustard yellow then no worry, a few green or rainbow poops are totally normal as well.

Yes as babies grow they start noticing their bodies and will grunt, groan, or fuss while passing gas or pooping. My daughter was so noisy when she pooped or farted I nicknamed her 'gassy goose' she would honk like a goose... although they aren't exactly enjoying themselves they are usually fine (no one really loves pooping, except my husband who thinks its the only time he can read)

You said there is no visible sign of pain and that is good, crying or screaming would indicated a problem.

It is very likely your milk is fully in and is making her get lots of foremilk, be sure to let her nurse from one breast fully before switching, generally you can tell if your breast is empty by the way baby is acting, falling asleep or acting dis-interested is the big indicator but some babies fuss too.

    hope this helps!

  • Her poop was still pretty soft (definitely no pebbles!), so I guess it's just one of the many colors of the poopy rainbow.

I only nurse on one side and it's usually for 25 mins (with nipple shield). Though come to think of it, last night she did have two shorter nursing sessions of 15 mins before she passed out on me. I try and make sure she gets the hindmilk, but will definitely keep an extra close watch now since too much foremilk may be the issue.

    Thanks!!

  • Not to sound snarky, but it's impossible for an exclusively breastfed baby to be constipated since breast milk is a laxative.

That being said, my LO had the same issue. She nursed long periods of time in the beginning and then tapered off then when a nursing strike because my letdown would come out too fast. It took a few weeks of block feeding to get everything straightened out. But she had plenty of icky green poo and gas that really bothered her. Give it a few more weeks for your supply to even out and you should start to go back to those yellow seedy poops. Good luck!
