SAHMs: Do you have a cleaning schedule?

I was just talking to a friend and she was telling me that she follows this weekly cleaning schedule to keep her house in order.  https://www.artbookbindery.net/timewarpwife/CleaningSchedule.pdf

Do people really do this?  Am I the only one who doesn't?  I clean as needed (dishes and laundry and floors are a daily thing at our house.)

Re: SAHMs: Do you have a cleaning schedule?

  • LMAO! Who has time to do all this with a toddler running around? When I made the decision to stay home, I thought this is how life would be. Now, I do it like you - look around and do what needs to be done. Like DD would allow me to scrub anything! I was really proud of dusting the upstairs the other day, but it took a couple of hours because I kept having to stop to read her books that she brought me, or check on her. Looking at that list, however, makes me think that perhaps I'll start a monthly list. Maybe more of a focus for the week.
  • Ha!  Ohhh, that's rich.

Um, no.  I clean as needed.  Dishes are pretty much a daily thing, as is picking up toys at the end of the night, but otherwise, everything else is when I see fit.  When the boys are at school on Thursdays is generally when I vacuum/mop/sweep and wipe stuff down.  I only do the laundry when the 3 baskets are full.  I do live with 3 boys and 2 cats, so the floors (wood/tile) get hairy and dirty pretty quickly, but I'm not about to clean them daily b/c I would be certifiably insane (2 seconds after mopping, I swear my kitchen floor is dirty again b/c of the other inhabitants of the house).  Whatever.  When we have people coming over, that's when I really get clean.  :)

  • My cleaning schedule goes something like this.

Oh sh!t!  Someone is coming over to our house!  They'll be here in 20 minutes!  ::runs around like a crazy person furiously cleaning::

Luckily, this happens at least once a week when the girls come over so most Mondays the house looks decent.  Most weeks I even sweep.

My other schedule goes something like this.

It's midnight and I'm ready for bed.  ::goes into kitchen to get a glass of water, notices the dinner dishes never got washed and throws a little cleaning temper tantrum::

  • I don't have a set schedule, per se, but I do try and clean *something* every day.  I haaaaate cleaning the entire house in one day so I try and break it up as much as possible.  If something needs cleaning, I take care of it.  But I try and do as much as possible with that cleaning product/apparatus/tool before putting it away.  (i.e. - the other night, I had to clean the toilet so while I had my gloves on and the cleaners out I went ahead and cleaned both toilets in the house.  And because I had the disinfectant out to clean the outside of the toilets, I went ahead and wiped down the bathroom counters.  It probably took me 30 minutes but I feel like my bathrooms are waaaaaay cleaner now.)

  • I'm pretty much on an as needed basis, but I wish I could stick to a schedule.  I tried it once and I got off track after a few months.  I think I cleaned more and got more done/ was more efficient when it's all written down for me.
  • WTF - vacuum behind the couches? People do that on a regular basis?

The only schedule I have is trying to clean the bathrooms (toilets and sinks) once a week and change all bedding every other week. Laundry, tidying, cleaning the kitchen, floors, etc is an ongoing thing. Stuff like dusting? Yeah, that's when I look at the shelves and think "Ewwww...I really should dust that."

  • I would stress myself out waaaaay too much if I tried to follow some schedule. I would work myself to death. I do what I can, when I can and my house is decently clean. I usually do dishes, laundry & toy pick-up every day.

  • I do all my cleaning on Mondays.  I like to do everything in one day so that I feel like the house is actually clean, its not just an ongoing process.  We let the house go on weekends so I'm ready to get to on Monday morning.

Lucky for me, Layna is awesome and independent.  She pretty much entertains herself for hours while I clean.  But I just signed her up for MDO and she starts next week, I'm so excited to be able to blast the radio and not feel guilty for ignoring her :)

I read that and had to laugh.  Sometimes I'll wake up and start cleaning and if I'm at it for more than an hour DH will ask if someone's coming over. lol
No I normally do a little bit here and there so I don't have to clean for hours all at once.

  • I clean when someone's coming over, too.  Once in a while it happens that I'm able to get stuff done at other times, but usually I'd rather read or work on projects.  We have people over quite a bit, so it pretty much means I'm cleaning weekly and DH helps.  It is amazing how quickly we can completely trash the house again though, kind of mind-blowing.
  • Kitchen, sweeping, vacuuming and picking up toys is a daily thing.  Mondays and Tuesdays I do laundry including towels and sheets.  Thursday I dust the house and Friday I clean the bathrooms, mop and clean all mirrors and TV's.  Once a month I dust the blinds and I try to dust the baseboards about once a month but doesn't always happen. I enjoy cleaning but it takes so much extra time with a toddler!
