Nutramigen same as going dairy free?

I have an extremely fussy 7 week old baby who strains to pass gas and has tummy issues.  Per pedi I have gone dairy free (a week so far) and no difference yet.  She has been screaming/fussying more than usual the past 5 days, would going dairy free make a difference you think in making her more fussy?  Also, I have Nutramigen that we were going to try but its expensive and if its the same as me being dairy free its not worth making her drink that (and she didn't like the taste at all).  Any suggestions, ideas or knowledge on this is appreciated!

Re: Nutramigen same as going dairy free?

  • I believe it is, my DS1 was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy at 5 months and we were told to go on Nutramigen.  Call Enfamil, they are very helpful and they might even send you coupons just for calling in.  Hope this helps!

  • I am currently on a total elimination diet to try and figure out why my daughter screams like a banshee 10+ hours a day. I'm doing the diet recommended by Dr Sears. It kinda sucks but I'm noticing a difference in her.

Your LO may have an issue with something else other than cows milk protein. Are you eliminating all hidden dairy - casein, etc? For a good list search kellymom.com for the hidden dairy list. Also, it can take 2-3 weeks for the cows milk proteins to leave your body, and an additional few weeks even to leave LOs system. Identifying a dairy issue takes a really long time

Sorry I'd post links but I'm on my phone. Good luck!

  • I am doing all hidden dairy, its in sooo much! If this doesn't work after a couple weeks I'll move to eliminate soy as well, trying to avoid that!  Thanks for the tips!
  • I think Nutramigen is the same as going dairy and soy free-- but the difference is, it's really hard to do this when breastfeeding. It's totally doable it's just hard-- it's in EVERYTHING so you literally have to only eat fruit, veggies, nuts, proteins. That can be nearly impossible for some people, so Nutramigen is the sure thing. My first son was on it for a year, and I'll warn you-- it was about $250 a month. I'd really try to cut out all the "bad" foods first, before going the formula route (just based on cost alone). With my second son, I'm cutting out all dairy and soy for these reasons, and trying to make BFing work.

I've also heard tomatoes and citrus can be an issue for BF-ing babies. Good luck!
