Car Seat 5 Year Rule in NY State?

Hi Ladies,

A co-worker mentioned to me in passing that NY State has a new rule that you cannot use car seats older than 5 years. Do you have more information on this? I tried googling and could not find anything. What's the penalty for it?

My brother has offered us my nephew's convertible car seat (infant to toddler) but my nephew is 5 years now so the car seat is definitely 5 years old.

Thanks!

  • I don't know NY law on it, but I can't imagine any police officer un-installing your car seat at a traffic stop to check and see if it is expired.  If it is a law, it is not an enforcable one.

The bigger issue is that car seats expire, so I wouldn't want to use an expired one.  The brand we have expires after 7 or 8 yrs, I forget which one.  But I think some brands are less. The car seat itself should have a sticker on it saying the expiration date.

  • We were trying to figure this out the other day.  I have a carseat that is manufactured in 2007, but it doesn't have an expiration.  We were trying to figure out if it was a 5 year rule, so I'll be interested if anyone knows.
