A BFing success after 5 weeks... now new questions

We've struggled with a bad latch, low supply and DS is a lazy eater. I decided to go back to the LC yesterday since it had been 2 weeks and I wanted to see if our issues were resolved. The latch is fixed and now instead of only taking in 15mLs per feeding, he took in 62 in 20 minutes, and a total of 106 in an hour. So now we are to BF all the time. She hopes that he'll start getting more efficient.

How long does it take your LO to feed? How do you know they're done? I have to feed both sides because of supply, she said take him off the first after 30 minutesand give him the second. If your LO eats relatively quickly, have they always been like that or did it get better over time? We're basically starting from scratch even though he's 5wks old now.

We were also officially diagnosed with a dairy intolerance. She said to take a day of planning then cut it all out. Goodbye, cheese :(

  • My first son I nursed about 30 mins on each side everytime. He wanted to eat all the time!? With my secound son I would let him nurse 30 min during the day but at night I went to 15mins on each side. They would fall asleep nursing so I would have to wake them a little to keep giong. But they finally figured it out and it was all good!

I was dairy free with both of them. I loved blue dimond almond milk and there are so many great products out there you really just have to look and read all the lables. If he can still do soy you're in luck! I drank alot of calcium filled orange juice. The plus is cutting out dairy it really helps you get your body back faster:)

Good Luck! BF can be tough but totally worth it in the end!!!! Enjoy your time together!

  • It definitely gets better! In the beginning (it's all a bit hazy) it took forever to feed. I'd burp and switch sides when he popped off, probably after 15-20 minutes. Now, as a much older baby, I'm surprised when he eats for more than 5. A really good feed is 10 minutes.

You're doing great to get over so many hurdles! Hang in there, and keep seeking support. It will get easier, it will get less time consuming.
