my puppy has been an indoor dog since we got him. I have been waiting and waiting for him to grow out of the tearing sh!t up phase, and it isn't getting better. In fact, I think it MAY be getting worse. He has literally chewed off a piece of trim off the wall, as well as some wall paper. I am furious, but at the same time feel like I cannot blame him for being a dog but instead blame myself for not training him properly I guess. I don't know what to do, so it looks like I will be going out this evening to look at outdoor dog kennels where he will have to start staying outside while we are not home.
My confession?? I am sitting here almost hyperventilating thinking about leaving my puppy outside!! It is seriously causing me anxiety complete with tears.
Crate is the way to go. Growing up I had labs and they were never ever locked up when we weren't home. Fast forward to now we own a Brittany who has so much energy we just wish we lived on a farm. However she also has speration anxiety. Never Ever Ever tears a thing up when we are home, but we always crate her when we are gone. At first she hated it and would litterally scream and move the crate. She even broke free from a crate and when I pulled in the driveway..there she was in the front window. So after that I tried to let her do what she wanted..why do we give in to our dogs? Any way she literally ripped apart my house (thank goodness it was base housing!) She even ejected our favorite wii game from the wii and ate it. Chewed every pillow and cushion, even ate some irreplaceable sculptures my DH got while stationed in Korea. As mad as we were somehow we still felt bad. She is literally our spoiled child who we love dearly. After that we decided she will forever be a crate dog. It sucks our friends friendly pit comes over and she actually behaves when left out with her, however decides our house is her personal bathroom, even though she never goes in her crate. So we had to find the perfect size crate, not big enough for her to throw a tantrum but big enough for her to be comfortable. She still shakes and hides when she knows we are leaving but if you say "house" she goes right in b/c she gets a treat. I have heard don't use the crate for time outs if that is where they spend time when your gone or they confuse it. On nye she was able to move the crate to the table pull the table cloth down and break some stuff, so crates don't save your house but I agree with the blanket idea. Geesh sorry I just rambled so much!

My confession is that I'm feeling very sorry for myself today. I'm jealous that DH went out to lunch with his guy friends because I don't have any female friends to hang out with here (even though we've lived here for over 2 years).
And I also confess that I feel stupid making a confession like this. Not sure why I'm so moody today; I think it's too early for PMS.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I talked to DH and we are going to use the weekend to test out the crate again.. he is older now and maybe he will do better.
And for the record, I wasn't trying to make excuses, and if that is how it came off, I apologize. I will be the first one to admit that I have been very lax with the animals and I have been terrible in the training department. But I am trying to learn from it and move forward. If the crating thing doesn't work, I will look into the other advice I received of hiring help. I will look into obedience training if I am unsuccessful at training myself.
Again thanks for the advice.

What kind of dog do you have? He looks like a dog that would require a lot of attention and exercise. My dogs behave horribly (even with obedience training) if they are bored and not given enough exercise. They also go into their crates whenever we are gone and even some overnights. One of our dogs whines and cries when we put him in his crate - but he goes into it happily whenever we ask him. We even just put our shoes on and he'll run to his kennel and wait inside. It's hard, but it really is for the best interest of you AND the animal. They can get into something and kill themselves, which would be awful to come home to.
This! I have 2 boxers and they can be very distructive so we crate also. I feel guilty doing it but they have destroyed too many things to count. We don't have to crate them day to day but as soon as I put up our Christmas tree every year, the crates go up too. My younger dog who is now 4, decides to basically eat the tree when we are gone. Broken glass ornaments, you name it. I am so afraid he will die from eating something like that. It's just not worth it. So the crate it is for them.

I'm annoyed with my friend right now. SHe is pregnant with #4 right now. I looked at the registry and she is getting a new crib, pack n play, activity center, etc. All the stuff she had from her first three kids is still in great condition. I think she is ridiculous for asking for brand new when she got brand new with each of the other three kids.
I know part of this is jealousy because we are ttc and she just pops kids out left and right. I just think it's a great waste of $ to spend on brand new stuff when she has perfectly fine stuff already. Why not save that money for them for stuff they will need later on? Whatevs.
Re: FFFC!
What color hair do you have? I want to try this.

This.
We rearranged our work breakroom recently and I was secretly excited that my new seat blocks my view of a fugly (is that how you spell it?) co-worker.
